Zed Travel and Standby on WestJet
WestJet offers flights within Canada, to and from the US, Hawaii, and to and from the Carribean. If you are traveling standby and need extra options, you can fly WestJet to any Canadian gateway to make connections with other ZED carriers. Great connections cities are YVR, YYC, YYZ, YUL. From the US we depart from MIA, FLL, TPA, MCO, PHX, LAS, LAX, SFO, EWR, LGA, ORD (starting soon with 8-daily flights being operated by a B737) HNL, OGG, KOA, AND LIH. There are many other cities to choose from! WestJet does not overbook their flights, first bag is free, complimentary live-tv, complimentary beverages and light snacks, as well as a great buy-on-board menu. I know WestJet is not that well known in the US, so I just wanted to share that we offer great flights, great connections to other ZED carriers, and great hospitality!

Are these Hawaii flights seasonal?

The Hawaii flights are year round (HNL, OGG, KOA, LIH). I always remind people to plan well in the winter months. Flight loads are high, and strong winds from the Jet Stream during the winter can causes flights to be weight restricted... Most flights leave from YVR, however during the winter months there are direct flights from YYC, YEG, and YYJ. If you are ever planning to travel on WestJet drop me a line and I can answer any of your questions.

Man, Hawaii to YEG on a 737. I can only imagine that flight getting weight restricted pretty heavily. That said, it's always a good idea to bring your passport when going to HNL. If you get stuck, there are connections through NRT (and Canada isn't a bad idea, either) and most people do not bring one. If you have a passport, you automatically get a good boost past others that may have higher seniority.

The YEG and YYC flights are operated on a sub-leased 757. In the past these flights were operated by the 737 and were weight restricted.

I have some friends who were going to Hawaii from Atlanta. They apparently got to LAX to find the flights very full. They were able to get ZEDS on WestJet and were able to go LAX - YVR - HNL. They said it was somewhat more expensive. but they arrived the same day and were happy to start their vacation. I have heard of some people flying into YUL and YYZ from JFK and LGA to connect to some destinations in Florida, and even to the Caribbean. In terms of connecting airports, YVR is great, so is YUL. YYZ is ok, however the domestic/international terminal does not offer much in terms of amenities. I recommend that if they are going to catch a WestJet flight in YVR, they should try to arrive early in the morning. YVR now has a monorail/metro system that connects the airport with Downtown Vancouver. I have had many friends arrive in the morning, check-in for their connecting flights, drop their bags, and then hop on the train to explore. It is a great option and helps pass the time. As well, Vancouver is a beautiful city and is great for exploring. As well, new for this summer, daily direct flights to Whitehorse!
