I was wondering if anyone had experience non rev flying United or any other airline to Malaysia before or during Chinese New Year? I want to go see it, but would be traveling 6 days before New Year starts. Am I crazy?! No one at reservations seems to know if a lot of Chinese travel home for this event. I would appreciate any feedback...

Hello, I am a Malaysian Chinese. I thought about going home on non-rev too for Chinese New Year but I think the risk is rather high so I am considering buying a confirmed ticket.

I know everytime I travel on the LA-Taipei-KUL flight, they are FULL. FYI, lots of Chinese Malaysians try their best to get home for Chinese New Year. It is the biggest festival for us.

Actually, I posted an inquiry on the Europe forum on this website about non-rev from FRA to KUL because it is a direct flight (you can see my posting there). If you are flying out of LA, there is no direct flight to KUL, which means you may be stucked in Taipei/Japan even if you get on the flight in LA. That's why I was thinking about going through Europe.

    What is your plan?

    Thanks Joyce,
I was afraid of that...I was planning on going on UAL flight 869 from SFO to Singapore with a stop in Hong Kong (it is considered a single flight and they said thatthey usually book you all the way through, unless they are very full). Of course when we checked loads it is still wide open right now...but that doesn't mean anything. I was planning on leaving early...around January 16th...do you think that makes a difference? How long before the beginning of New Year do you normally go home? Do you fly United also?

    Traecy:
I did not know they book you all the way through from SFO. If that's the case, then it might not be a bad idea.

I am thinking about leaving on January 16 as well and coming back on January 25. It will probably be a very busy weekend for traveling because people do try to come home a few days before the actual Chinese New Year to spend time with their families and friends and do last minute shopping.

I have considered the United Airlines route as well but my final destination is actually Sibu in East Malaysia. Going through Singapore means I will be losing a lot of transit time. That's why I wanted to use Malaysia Airlines.

When I told my mother about my standby plan for Chinese New Year, she told me to just buy a confirmed ticket and get home on time. Oh well......

I have never use an ID75/ID90 before. My coworkers said we can just call the reservation line of the airlines and check on seat availability, is that right?
