Default Why did NRT-MSP 744 take off with 18 empty business seats?

28 Sept FLT from NRT-MSP aircraft 744 took off with 18 business seats and 147 economy seats. All non revs were assigned and seated in coach. Why didn't the non-revs get seated in business class since these seats were available?

No, we just select Biz or Coach.

No Idea. I checked several of the other departures from NRT and they all put non-revs up front.

Could it have been a weight and balance issue--being there were so many empty seats in coach? My mom was on a special flight to HNL for a 747 transport--only non revs were on the plane and all were in business class-leaving the coach cabin empty. ???? any more ideas?

Happened again on flight Delta 622 OCT THIRD... 147 empty in coach. 41 open in business class and again all nonrevs in coach.....could it be that they are closing parts of business class down because of upgrading the 747 to flat beds in business class? Or wouldnt they just take the plane out of service until that plane's upgrade was complete. Any ideas ? PILOTS??? WEIGHT AND BALANCE??

well, I for one am happy to know this because that was one of options to connect to Bali. Thanks for letting us know even at your own expense. I'd be pretty unhappy, too. I'd probably give them the boarding pass back, ask what's it about, then layover one nite just to avoid coach. Sorry you got the shaft. That really stinks!
It has to be an issue about all those empty seats in coach for balance. I flew the 747 to DTW from NRT this spring and sat up top, but it was the old config--reclined seats, no beds. It was very cool, nonetheless.
