Continuing to think outside of the box...

I haven't priced tickets to Asia in years. Used to help family get to and from. $2000 is steep but in the past, Asiana, maybe Korean, China Airlines & Eva Air used to be a few hundred $$ cheaper than the Cathay and Singapore Airlines of the world. Obviously, you may consider Philippine Airlines. Occasionally even the expensive names like Cathay will have a fare sale. The mainland China airlines might be cheap but not sure if you'll run into visa issues as a transit passenger. Also, routing thru the middle east like on Kuwait Airways, Qatar or Emirates. Another alternative is Hawaiian Airlines from HNL. You might save a few bucks if you can nonrev to HNL but in the summer, those flights are full as well.

If you go the SYD route, you could purchase a cheap ticket on Jetstar from SYD. Back to DL, you may want to look into pricing tickets to NRT from cities where there is more competition like JFK, LAX or SFO instead of from ATL. Or from ATL, see what ATL-DFW-NRT costs you on AA or ATL-IAH-NRT on UA. As rma suggested, sometimes fares on the majors from European cities might be cheaper.

She's a buddy pass rider, folks. I don't think she has the option to fly other carriers.

Well in that case maybe she should be contacting Phineas Fogg and a Hot Air Balloon - "Around the World in 80 Days" ! LOL
There is just so much you can do and expect to do with a 'Buddy Pass'.
But seriously she can use the 'Buddy Pass' to travel as far as possible and then like any other non-rev at the end of his rope - Buy a Ticket !
Avoid the troublesome bottlenecks and remember to have all the Passport and VISA requirements satisfied.
It is hard to compensate for non-refundable tickets and purchase requirements of buying online but that is the way it is in todays market.
Just have to figure out the best way to put it all together for minimal cost.
Use the internet to its full extent - use Priceline; Kayak; Hotwire and the websites of the various air carriers that get you from here to there.
This does not cost anything other than the electricity to run the computer/laptop and perhaps the internet subscriber fees.
The more lead time you have to plan the better to find a routing that works. Give thought to a back up plan or two.
Buddy Passes are not the best way to travel but they do work for the most part.
One final note becareful crossing the date line - you might find yourself home before you start and not have to worry about time travel ! LOL

    Scubabride--don't forget:
    Matrix - ITA Software
for revenue tickets. LCC's you'll prob have to find on your own. Jetstar, Tiger, all sorts of those in Asia--watch those extra fees and regs for carry-on sizes.
I almost always see better numbers JFK/NRT (and sometimes DTW). ATL is the worst. MSP is very popular lately. LAX is good/bad any given day. SFO is also fickle. SEA is pretty reliable for coach (UGH) I've seen seats sell out in a day. No shows are rare in BE.
Don't forget Haneda and transfer to NRT as last resort. Then you can freak out getting to MNL. (PS--I got my vanilla beans in Bali--70 long ones for $15!!)
