    Default Learned something new

I just had this experience. As nonrevs we know, if you don't make the flight - yours bags (domestic) are on the plane anyway and off to your destination. Meanwhile your stuck trying to get out on the following flights.
While waiting to get space later on that evening, my cell phone rings with an 800 number. I don't normally answer, let it go to VM as it normally is charity's or political operatives looking for donations. But this time I did answer.
It was DELTA - a robo call informing me that my bag is at the Baggage claim office at my destination and go there to claim it.

So how close to getting on the flight were you ?
Were there any N/Rs that got on the flight ?
This should not have happened. All baggage of a
N/R standbys is supposed to be boarded IF the N/R
gets on the flight - otherwise returned to the
claim area for pick-up or carried forward to the
    next standby flight.
If there was a good chance of your getting on the
flight the gate agent may have jumped the gun
and cleared all the baggage but then as you well
know you did not get on the flight due to some
last minute musical seat clearing problem and
your baggage danced away without you.
Dilema - Tell Delta to return the baggage back
to where you are -OR- hold for your questionable
    arrival sometime in the future.
But you have to tell Delta what you want done !
And so much for the one way conversation with
Siri about your baggage being available for your
pickup at the destination you did not get to !
Another episode in N/R Baggage Handling 101.

Wow, RMA. Unless using a rev tkt, nonrevs have no right to tell DL to return bags. You ASK for the courtesy. Perhaps that was just a poor choice of wording?

Sorry OLD school Delta was a great deal more generous in years past about reuniting bags and the N/Rs !
Never the less Delta WILL return the bags back to the origin point or hold at the arrival airport pending arrival - just alert them to what needs to be done Oh ah er Pretty Please with sugar !

I am still utterly astounded that in todays climate US carriers continue to allow bags to travel without the accompanying passenger ..regardless of the passenger type.
I had this happen to me once a few years ago and was staggered by the naivety of the airline staff as to what the consequences of such a process could be !!!!
