Buddy Pass Business Class Eligibility
Hi,
My Delta FA friend has offered me a Buddy Pass for my upcoming trip from LAX-SYD. I lie-flat seat would be great for this long overnight flight. I heard that I'm not eligible for First Class since I'm not traveling with him. But, am I eligible for Business Class, if available? If not, I'll buy a cheaper ID-90 ticket.

I don't believe that's correct. Effective January 1, 2018 Buddy Pass riders are only eligible to a Premium Class Cabin if travelling with the employee who gave them the pass. Premium Cabins include Business Class and Delta 1.
Payment was also changed and they can only be paid for via payroll deduction from the employee buying the pass.
These changes were to made to reduce abuses of Buddy Passes.

Delta was planning on not allowing buddy passes to ride in J unless there was another pass rider (not only the employee) with them. However, that was postponed and still hasn't been implemented.
On the other hand, the chance of an S2 getting J LAX-SYD is vanishingly small. S4, not a chance. It's not unlikely you'll have to wait several days even to get a seat.
Like I said earlier. If it's open, you will get it. I'm in ATL. Buddies get 1st if open.
