Well, today they are removing the, "America West," sign from the HQ here in Tempe AZ. It will be replaced by the US Airways sign in time for the close of the merger next week.

Also, we had a farewell event yesterday...local story here: Farewell_to_AWA

Thankfully, I brought my camera, took some pictures of the events yesterday, and also walked across the street and took some pictures of the building. I may take some of the sign coming down today, and the new sign going up in a few days. Will post some pictures in the next few days.

    Goodbye "Cactus"!

Will the America West Arena be getting a new name too?

Yes, America West Arena will be renamed...the announcement should be coming out shortly. Not sure if it will happen before the Sun's start the new season though.

It was amazing how quickly those guys worked on the sign. The whole thing was down in about 2 hours, now they are preparing the electrical for the new one. I think there will be a temporary banner over the space until the merger is official.

Was only 1 day without a sign, the workers were at it early today. It took the whole day this time, and the new sign is about 2x as big as the old one.

Does one gather from this that the 'merger' is in reality a US Airways takeover just written in political language??

Thanks for the pictures, Tim. From my vantage point in LAS, things look all quiet on the merger front so far, not to mention pretty good. We have incorporated the US Air folks and they are warm and friendly new colleagues. Optimism rules.

Paul it is US Airways in name but America West in style. We from the old US Airways like HPs style and are very glad to be part of the the team.
Our new route system covers all of North America, Carribean and with the Star Alliance the world. We plan to not only have a great airline, but we plan to have fun along the way. Fun is something US Airways has not had in a long time so we appreciate our new co-workers at HP who are putting the enjoyment back into our jobs.

I personally think it is really sad and a little scary. My mom has been working for HP my whole life time and I drive by HQ every day on my way to school (ASU). I remember a time when there still was take your daughter to work day and I got to be a flight attendant, but now mom would probably get in trouble for that. I will really miss all the America West stuff, like the old pin on wings that are now stick on wings for the kids. I think it is scary because my mom was a big fish in a little pond in seniority and now she is being thrown into a very big pond and will be low man on the totem pole. That effects her (and mine) stand by status if I am not mistaken. And being on an exchange in Denmark, I would really like to have my mom visit me, so I how all works out. (and that I can get home next June). I will miss America West, it's all I've even known.
