Anyone familiar with using flyzed.com or flying SA using zed in general?

zed.com:
I can log in and check flights. I get a smiley to frowning face. I can see how to list.

I see that I can find out how much a zed fare costs on UAL's intranet site.

Why don't all flights show up when I try to figure out the cost on UAL's site? As an example, on zed I can see multiple direct flights from HKG to KUL, but on UAL's zed fares calculator it tells me that there are no direct flights. WTF?

How do I figure out which flight is in a low, medium and high zone?

Where do I pay for the tickets? Does it work like an ID90?

Any other tips and tricks?

Thank you in advance.

Andrew

you buy the tickets from your airlines ticket counter. You'll get a paper flight coupon.

There are not low, medium, and high zones. There are, I believe, 10 zones. Each zone has 3 fares, low, medium, and high. The standard that I've seen is an employee pays medium, and a parent would pay high. You'll pretty much only get a low on an airline in your alliance(Star, Skyteam...). You should be able to look up your airlines agreement with whatever airline your hoping to zed on on your employee website(I know on Deltanet you can).

But ticketing is done at your airlines counter.

I do not trust flyzed, the face reflects the seats for sale not the real inventory.

The UAL site may only show those airlines with which UA has a ZED agreement and from what I understand UAL does not have a lot (22 I think) and South African is not one of them. So, more than likely, you still have an ID90 with SA. In the example you give (HKGKUL) I found that CX, MH are the only carriers operating nonstop flights in the market. I don't think UAL has agreements with either.

The fare level (Low, Medium, High) will depend on the bilateral concurrence UA has made with each of the other airlines. As stated above, the standard is Medium. There are, by the way, 9 mileage bands.

OK, I'm also about to high dive into my first ZED experience after having many many 'back up plan' ID90s in the past. Going over, I'm fairly confident about my CDG-SPU even though it's Croatia Airlines flight and so far no takers on checking loads (it's a happy face though on FlyZed). On the return, I need to have a bunch of back up plans into different airports and will either take a direct flight or may have to transfer through Zagreb (or another city). I want to have the following back ups for the return:

9/27: IB3861 DBV-MAD (direct)
9/27: B2883 DBV-LGW (direct)
9/28: OU651 SPU-ZAG, ZAG-AMS OU450

QUESTION: Do I 're use' the same tickets/passes even though they are on different days, different airports and different carriers? I think I need to have at least 3 segments for a possible stop. Do I buy one 3 segment and one direct and 'reuse' these?

QUESTION: Should I be really worried about relying on FlyZed for availability? For the OU flights, that's all I've got.

Thank you all!

OK, thanks for the info. I now see that I would buy the Zed tix through UA just like an ID90.

I did a bit of sleuthing to try and pin down the zed loads. I found a website (www.seatcounter.com) that supposedly lists seat availability by booking class. It shows booking classes A through Z, #s 0-9. I compared this info for a 9/25 LAX-SYD flight on UA's employee site, and it seems that the higher the # the more seats are available. The booking class stumps me, though. I thought that there was only 3? Flyzed shows a green smiley face which agrees with UA's #s. Flyzed also displays a red face for QF and AA flights that same day, which agrees with the low red numbers on seatcounter.

So, has anyone used this seatcounter.com and know exactly what the As-Zs mean? I thought that FBE meant first, business, economy?

Any help is appreciated. I'm trying to plan a far away trip later next month and I'd prefer not to be stranded. Not that it wouldn't be so bad!

Pretty sure the A-Z is how many seats in each fare class is available.

Any answer of how many Zed tickets I would need if I may have to switch days or airports?

PANTS, ZED is transferrable to different carriers if the other carrier has the same ZED agreement. For instance, a zone 1 ZED from PHL to CLE should be perfectly valid on both CO and US. Now, I believe that same zone 1 ZED should also be valid from CLE to PIT on either airline, but do NOT quote that. I've never tried and don't want to find out mid travel that I'm wrong. Again, the agreement must be present. Another example, I could purchase a ZED MDT-ORD on AA, but my back up would be UA, with which DL does not have a ZED agreement. So you're ZED is worthless to UA, and on that route, about 1/4 the price.

By "re-use" I'm thinking you mean try again. Of course, once you fly, the ZED is used. Should you not get on a US from PHL-CLE, yes, you can try again on CO. A ZED is good for 90 days from the purchase date. You needn't make any changes to try Sunday instead of Saturday. But the extra leg. ZED is per flight segment. For instance, QF flies JFK-LAX-SYD. To take that whole flight, you would need 1 ZED JFK-LAX, and another LAX-SYD even though its a "direct," or "through" flight. So your one backup would require 2 extra ZEDS. Nobody likes having their money tied up, but ZEDs are fully refundable, and I'd rather have to refund 300 bucks worth upon my return, than be stuck in BKK and not be able to purchase the one I really need.

And loads, FlyZED gives you an Idea, and this community is great to get loads checked. As long as you don't bug, I don't think it's much of a problem to call the airline and inquire about a load or 2, just have your record locator and be quick, efficient, and very nice.

Drew, don't look at seatcounter. It lies to you. Seatcounter will show you the authorized availability for each FARE class. F, J, and Y are the actual seating cabins, however there are very many fare classes. If the lowest fare class is showing 9s, then the flight is probably pretty good, as the lowest fare classes are the first to sell out. But, I've seen some international routes oversold by 5 with another 40 tickets authorized(so it would look great on seatcounter, but its oversold already). Again, done quickly and nicely, I don't think it's a big deal to bug a res agent quick about the load for a flight on which you are listed.

Probably a lot has been answered for you already, but ....

SA do not operate HKG/KUL. In any event, we do not have a ZED with SA.
For that matter, we do not have one with MH or CX.
Both carriers are ID90.

The fare for CX is $96 return + $30.17 taxes return.
One way $57 + $15.41 taxes.

The fares are common rated for MH.

You could, if you wanted to, fly HKG/SIN on UA and enjoy the front 2 cabins.
SIN/KUL - I have taken the bus. It was fun, comfortable and travelled through the night.
Or you can fly, it's a shorter sector, cheaper and frequencies are great.

SIN/KUL you need to forget SQ, it's ID75.
On MH, the one way fare is : $ 10.00 + $ 14.75

These rates are subject to change since I have calculated based on local currency converted to USD today.

For loads, I tend to visit the website of the carrier in question, attempt to book the maximum number of seats it allows you on their booking engine.
This of course does not allow for their own overbooking profile, but it lends some indication.

The preference is contact someone you know at the airline directly, their reservations office or this forum.

If you need specific assistance regarding UA/Interline travel, send me a private message via the forum and I'll try and help
you that way.
