I'm not sure how many airlines are left that still issue employees buddy passes in the sense that Southwest does (a free non rev travel pass that can be given to anyone and has no specific travel date), but if there are any out there, perhaps you'd be interested in swapping a pass or 2 with me. I have Southwest buddy passes and would like to trade with someone from another airline..

Your buddy passes are free to the user? I'd be happy to swap but ours (Alaska Airlines) require a fare of 10% of the full Y fare.

Yeah they're free. They just give them to us quarterly and they're good for any destination and can be given to anyone, good for 1 year from date of issue.. All you have to do is call the 800 number on the back and list.

Are your passes not unlike an ID90 then? I can already get on Alaska for $60.00 roundtrip + Tax.

Yes, Alaska guest passes are like an ID90 ticket. They are great for our nonpass eligible family and friends but not so much for other airline employees. I would love it if ours were free but, hey, we get a lot of them every year!

Yeah, ours are the same (NW) and are limited to travel either to the employee's home, or meeting up with the employee at a third destination.

    Really, really restrictive.

We don't get any... i wish we did as i love using those purple passes! There used to be a website swatrade.com where people could list tickets they won on interline carriers that they wanted to trade for purples (reds back then) or greens. I tried to look the site up but it redirects now. Maybe talk to someone at HDQ or the Pass Bureau? Heaps of ppl win those tix and want to trade, they just don't know who to trade with...

    num1bearsfan,

You better check your paycheck. I don't think WN buddy passes are free anymore (they were until a couple of years ago). From what I understand, WN employee's pay for each pass they accept (either $20 or $40) to cover any fringe benefit tax liabilities. Employees can choose to accept 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 passes per quarter.

Yes and no.. The way it works is due to a tax issue, the passes had to start being reported as taxable income and thus had to be given a value. The company determined that the passes are worth $40 each. So what happens is, each time passes are distributed they add $40 additional per pass to the gross pay of each check and then deduct it at the same time. They do this so that we can pay the income tax on the $40. So we don't actually PAY that $40 per pass, we pay the income tax on $40... It's negligible.
