There's a famous quote by Benjamin Franklin that goes:
For want of a nail, the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe, the horse was lost.
For want of a horse, the rider was lost.
For want of a rider, the battle was lost.
For want of a battle, the kindgom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Well my tale of woe, was set in motion by a belt clip.

Because of a defective belt clip, the cell phone was lost.
Because we drove 75 miles before we noticed the cell phone was lost, we lost two hours of travel time.
Because we lost two hours of travel time we arrived in Phoenix after the rental car office was closed
Because the car rental office was closed, (and would be closed the following day for the holiday) we were forced to rent a car from Sky Harbor Airport
Because we rented the car from Sky Harbor Airport instead of the off-site office we had to pay an extra $128 in taxes and fees.
And all be-cause, someone's bargain basement detachable/swivel belt clip broke in the middle of the "flying J travel plaza.
Don't you just love a bargain?

Fee break down
15.1% Phoenix city tax
11.11% concession recovery fee
3.25% vechicle surcharge
$4.50 per day customer facility fee

Still on the road.

Mig, I can honestly say i've never understood Americans' penchant for cell phone holders/clips... but now I know why I don't wear one
Was the phone insured?

Come on Migflanker. Renting a car in the airport saved you money. Just think. Instead of taking a cab to the off airport rental place, you just saved 50 bucks getting to the place going, and 50 bucks coming back to the airport by taking a cab, plus another say, ten bucks on tips. And to think that by renting a car at the airport, it was ever so much more convenient to drop it in the airport right where you can catch your flight back home. I'd say that your cell phone clip saved you time and convenience and maybe not so much money. Did you really have to drive back to pick up a cell phone or could you really have done without it?
Perhaps a more appropriate Benjamin Franklin quote for your scenario would have been..."HASTE MAKES WASTE."
You got hasty when you took off without thinking about your cell phone. You misplaced your cell phone because you were used to seeing it on your clip, which in turn, caused you layed down your cell phone anywhere. You didn't mention how long it took you to find it when you got back home. Did you find it right away or did you spend a long time looking for it too? Nice Franklin quote but what really went down in the case of the cell phone clip costing you big bucks?

I fully agree that the rental fees at sky harbor are outrageous! I do all possible to avoid renting there but the alternative are places pretty far out and more difficult to get to without a car ergo - you rent one there. Like all taxes, those fees came for the stadium and decided to stay.

Setting the record straight -
1- The lost cell phone was not mine. Nooooo, my phone was plugged into the car's charger.
2- The owner of the phone, (who has begged for anonymity for obvious reasons ) now admits that the cell phone was not on a belt clip, but was instead half sticking out of a pocket.... Uh-huh
3- The phone was not immediately missed be....cause "anonymous" is not cell phone addicted.
4- After two days the airport car was returned and another cheaper car was rented from the Scottsdale office. Scottsdale is outside the additional tax and fee zone.
5- There are a lot of photo enforcement cameras in Phoenix, especially on Highland Ave, 24th St and loop 101. It takes 0.4 seonds to slam on brakes.

Yeah, we stayed at the Doubletree Scottsdale/Paradise Valley Resort. A benefit of Hilton HHonors points.
