Why Can't US airlines do this? Pre-Order meals.

Pre-order entrees are available on American for First and Business Class passengers on many routes. They did have a trial of pre-ordering buy on board products for coach passengers last year but I'm not sure if that has been expanded.
Actually, US Airways has this option for the buy on board food in several markets. My mother-in-law loved it when she visited a couple of months ago. I know I would use it to guarantee my meal choice was available by the time they got to my seat.

I should have elaborated on the quality and food options you get for $15 euros. Pretty amazing. With comp wine? Wow!
Funny how people do not blink at that price in Europe but in the US you'd have a ground swell of complaints about an on board meal (even with comp wine) that costs nearly $20. Heck, people here complain about meal pricing at $7-8 regardless of how good the food is!
