The U.S. Department of Transportation has given its blessing for a new airline to take over service in the Shoals. For two months, Northwest Alabama Regional Airport has been without airline service. That is why airport board members wanted to put the selection and approval of a new airline service provider on the fast track.
“I think this is very important that we get the right airline, and we get the right price structure. I think Boutique is going to fit that,” Muscle Shoals Mayor David Bradford explained.
Bradford sat on a subcommittee tasked with finding the right airline for Northwest Regional. He said Boutique Airlines is offering two round trips a day to Nashville and Atlanta during the week. Bradford said the price is right as well. Tickets to both locations will run passengers around $49.
After the two previous air service providers failed, Bradford said they have nowhere to go but up with Boutique.
“Build that reliability up, and then the costs of the flights are important also,” Bradford said. “And I think you are just going to have that special niche that we look for that are going to make people real comfortable.”
Mayor Bradford just wants people to give Boutique Airlines a chance when they’re ready to take off in February.
Boutique will operate under a two-year Essential Air Service contract which will subsidize their expenses through February of 2018.
The subsidy, worth $2.7 million, helps offset ticket prices for passengers.
