A strike at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport will occur just after the busy Thanksgiving holiday season. Workers supported the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) said this morning that the strike will begin on Nov. 29. The decision to wait until after Thanksgiving is meant to boost public support for the strike, reports CNN.
The workers striking at O’Hare include janitors, baggage handlers, cabin cleaners and wheelchair attendants. The workers are asking for $15 an hour and union rights. Currently, some employees are being paid the Illinois minimum wage of $8.25 an hour with most earning under $12 an hour. The SEIU is supporting the workers but no employees are members of the union.
