I just haven't been able to make up my mind 100%. For the most part I am in favor of it. My only concern is that they might be more likely to open the door in an attempt to defend other crew which may compromise the cockpit resulting in the whole plane being brought down.

I do not believe they would be a deterrent to terrorism. If anything, it brings more opportunity, because now you have firearms on the aircraft in the hands of possibly unskilled/unwilling-to-use-it flight crew. It would be like taking candy from a baby in a lot of cases.
While pilots are consummate professionals when piloting they have the reputation on the ground of being a little...well...roudy, raucous and boisterous. At the risk of offending a pilot or two I'm not sure I want an armed cowboy onboard.

I know many pilots I would have no problem with having a gun in the cockpit. Those pilots are not the ones pushing for guns. The pilots I know who want guns are cowboys. With air marshalls on many flights I think it is an overkill of firepower in the air. Therefore I am not sure the whole program is a good idea.
