It was one of those "let's go, it'll be fun" trips -- so it was off to Vegas for New Year's.
Now as most of you know, Vegas is always a difficult non-rev destination, add to that the New Year's holiday and we didn't even bother to look at loads; it was road trip all the way.

Vegas is about 280 miles from L.A. Normally it takes us about 5 hours, with a halfway rest/food/gas/ stop in Barstow.
The road to Vegas
-Desert- Barstow(In-N-Out Burger) - desert-Baker(the world's largest thermometer) - desert-Primm(Primm straddles the California/Nevada border 3 casinos) - still more desert- Vegas.

I suppose I should mention there's an enigmatic road sign, ZZYZX ROAD, and a lot of signs advertising the Mad Greek roadside diner. I have never investigated the road or the diner, although it is my intention to one day turn onto Zzyzx Road and see where it takes me, besides of course, to the end of the alphabet.

The idea was to leave a day or two early and beat the other 300,000+ out-of-towners heading for Vegas. So we left on the 29th, we still ran into heavy traffic, in fact it was bumper-to-bumper from Primm right into Vegas. The only saving grace being we weren't drving a stick. Although the guy driving the silver BMW M6 convertible in front of us for 50+ miles didn't seem particularly unhappy shifting gears.
Finally we came up over a rise and before us Vegas; the light from the top of the Luxor pyramid piercing the night sky. Vegas was packed but we scored a nice holiday package at the LV Hilton, which is right off the Strip.

Red Rock Canyon
We weren't exactly enthusiatic about the plan---biking out to & through Red Rock Canyon. Somehow we're friends with a group of cycling nuts, who think bicycling for miles and miles and miles is great fun. Sooooo, when the fanatics put on their helmets and gloves and headed off into Vegas traffic, RJ and I jumped into the car and drove out to Red Rock Canyon. The Canyon is beautiful, and there's a 13-mile scenic drive loop which is great. By the time the bicycle brigade showed up, we had finished driving the loop and were in major relax mode. We waved a sandwich salute as the fanatics pedaled off into the Canyon. I have to say they did look happy, but trust me, no happier than RJ and me munching on sandwiches & pickles from the Carnegie Deli (in the Mirage Hotel)- I stop by every time I'm in Vegas--m'm m'm good!

New Year's Eve-Fireworks over the Strip
Fireworks launched from the roofs of seven hotels along the Strip. The Strip is shut down to traffic, wall to wall people.
My group skipped the hordes in the street and enjoyed the hotel's celebration on the pool deck. We could see the fireworks just fine from the lounge chairs. There was singing, some dancing, plenty of champage/hot chocolate and a crazy newlywed couple in tuxedo and wedding dress--it was great.

Brake Lights
The trip back to LA was slow. And I have to tell you, those electronic games with audible music, beeps, tweets and chirps, that normally don't bother you, will drive you absolutely crazy on a car trip. Take my advice, ban all musical instruments and audible electronic devices from the car, it will save your sanity and probably someone's life.

New Year's Eve in Vegas - my husband's worst nightmare (he hates crowds) - but sounds like a lot of fun to me! I keep saying I'm going to Vegas and to NYC for New Years before I die.

Vegas Travel truisms -- The Do Not list

1. Do not nonrev to Vegas over a holiday weekend. No exceptions!

2. Do not nonrev into Vegas on a Friday, or out on a Sunday.
Exceptions
-- you are a glutton for punishment
-- you have multiple back-ups and enjoy sleeping on airport floors
-- you intend to buddy up with Vulindlela - who somehow manages (so he says ) to make it in and out of Vegas at will.

3. Do not drive to Vegas on a holiday weekend / major boxing match weekend / or weekend Streisand gives a live performance.
Exceptions
-- you can handle bumper-to-bumper traffic and no rest stops
and
-- you posses a stare so fierce, that a backseat pax upon just glimpsing your eyes in the rear view mirror, will immediately go into stealth mode, shrink into mush and start planning their funeral.

4. Do not drive L.A./Vegas on a Friday or Vegas/L.A. on a Sunday, unless you leave before the crack of dawn, or after morning/evening traffic
Exceptions
-- you love gridlock
-- you have a high tolerance for someone asking "why can't you just go around?" multiple times an hour

5. Do not drive on the Strip ( Las Vegas Blvd) - the traffic is bumper-to-bumper, pedestrians are always bolting into traffic, you have to do some serious bogarding to change lanes and you'll totally miss Elvis on the corner waving at you.

6. Don't take Koval

7. Don't valet park- most Vegas hotels have free parking, yes you have to walk, but exercise is good for you.
Exceptions
--Friday/Saturday/holiday night, parking is at a premium, so use the valet; just like having to "buy" that airplane ticket, sometimes you just have to pay.

I can personally add one tiny little caveat:
do not go to Las Vegas
after reading all the thoughts from our illustrious admin...
what is with you people???
ok--yes, "The Hangover" was a bit over the top and may NOT quite be possible, but c'mon!!
I've had a better time fixing a clogged toilet.
oh well, something for everyone?
PS--I laughed at the movie...

The trick to Vegas is getting up at the crack of dawn and trying for the first flight on Sunday. Rev pax always oversleep and miss this flight. My better half and I do vegas overnights from MSP about every couple months. Out on the last flight on Saturday night and back to MSP on the first morning flight on Sunday. Only one time in have we ever had to make other arrangments.... Like my signature says ...if you dont try..you dont fly
To drive from LAX instead of flying is just Blasphemy ! LOL
If you dont turn left...turn around
If you dont try, you dont fly!

CD, I was just about to say you're a glutton for punishment, until I remembered that a Vegas crack of dawn, isn't so early for you on a MSP (central time zone) body clock.
BTW, don't know if you're aware, but you can get last minute show tickets at a discount at TX4Tonight, there's a booth near the giant Coke bottle. ...." near the giant Coke bottle", now that's what I call cryptic directions.

Statistics don't lie.

I have flown into and out of LAS 342 times. It isn't always easy. I have had to fly LAS-SNA-PHX many times just to get to PHX.
One of my recent trips out of LAS took me on a LAS-SLC-MSP-IND route.
It was easier when HP had the LAS night flight hub...

Ah, exactly how long did this take? I'm assuming there was a backup plan that involved passports.

..comon man. You don't really keep track of all that do you? 342 times in and out of LAS??? According to my calculations, if you were to go to LAS every week, you would be doing this for SIX YEARS. "B.S FLAG". How can anybody like Las Vegas enough to visit it 342 times? Is Las Vegas that great for anybody?
Look maybe you have, maybe you haven't but I view your latest comments with extreme suspician. (Who knows, maybe my stories seem far fetched and not believable all of the time.)
