    Default Visa for Brazil

I am planning to visit Brazil in early 2011 and would like to apply for a Tourist Visa. Brazilian consulate in Houston website states that a confirmed itinerary/ticket is required with the visa application.

Anyone has experience in applying for a Brazil visa when going on a non rev ticket? If so, can you share your experience please? Thx

    yes--in DC.
You can take your ID and a copy of the DL printed itinerary. I took the listing for my flights and 2 copies of my husband's ID for both visas. I would be certain of all your details because Houston Brasilian Consulate is notorious for being very difficult. You might want to contact the company AA uses (DL uses CIBT and their extra fee isn't too high). I have their info if you need it. You r visa is only good for 90 days. Remember it's only good from day of issue to the end (not entry date), so plan accordingly.
Don't forget Carnival is in March next yr. nonrev is a b!tch
PS--I can't recall, but I think I had letter signed by Chief Pilot that basically asks them to extend courtesy as airline employee travel is unticketed...?

Just a little clarification... The visa is good for 5 years, but the first use must be within 90 day of issue. We had to mail our passports and application to the MIA office. I also send a copy of my wife's ID and printed listing. We had no problems and no question asked. Also, they would not accept via regular mail , we HAD to send it to them USPS Next Day / Second Day or FedEx. For the return of the passports they only required a SASE, but I spend a few extra $$ and enclosed a prepaid USPS Next Day envelope.

Scottfitz--I don't know when you applied but as of today, I disagree--Brasil is still not giving out 5 yr visas the way they used to. I have very accurate information from a high source in DC ( and I just asked about it for next year) and it just isn't the norm for the casual traveler. 3 yrs ago, I submitted a letter (I went back to my visa files and the letter response from the BC was that they would grant 5 yr visas in only exceptional cases now) When I called today, they absolutely stood by the 90 day and their policy of rare exception for a 5 yr. I still have my visa and it was never good for 5 years.
Perhaps you have extenuating circumstances, but it not the norm and advising a nonrev otherwise [without written verification from the consulate] might be a poor idea.

We applied for our visas two years ago.. If it's only 90 days now, how much are they charging?

Same price as the one that is 5 years. All of my friends obtained 5 year visas with no problem. The trick was to print out multiple flight listing over the entire year through DeltaNet. When I applied for my first Brasilian Visa a few years back I simply printed out five itineraries for various citites Delta flew to including Manuas, Rio, Sao Paulo, Fortaleza & Recife and attached those with my Visa application as proof that I needed a visa longer than 90 days and told them when I applied my desire to have a 5 year visa as well. I applied at the Atlanta Brasilian Consulate and it was a piece of cake. I got my visa back the next day.

What a brilliant idea!! I went to the DC consulate and they mailed ours back the next day. I had a written plea but no etxra flights (just intent) CLEVER!!

My wife and children are Brazilian. We go every year to Brazil. Before the Atlanta consulate opened, we had to go to Miami. (from NC) The last time I went to Miami, they gave me 30 day visa. Since then, Atlanta consulate informed me that since my wife is Brazilian, I qualify for a 5 year visa. My experience - they do whatever they want to at any given moment.

That's EXACTLY what my friend who manages a HUGE visa company told me. Glad to hear you got your extended one

I bought two visa's for Brazil at a hundred bucks a pop, and never got to go back. My five year visa was taken along with my expired passport about a year or two later. Isn't that for the birds? They don't transfer a good visa to a new passport. Not all is good down in Brazil these days. Around NOVO FIBURGA, region just west of Rio de Janeiro, lots of rain, mudslides, and lots of dead bodies everywhere. I hawked me a Sao Paulo news paper off one of the flights and read up on alot of that stuff. Something neat about foreign newspaper, they tapped on a famous artist that lived in Brazil, where they house his collection in Rio somewhere. They had a neat article on ESCHER, the artist from Holland. Go online and check out some of his work. I never heard of the man, but they had an article about him along with his most famous work..."relativety", if you like art, you will like this web site...all from a Brazilian newspaper.
