Default Update. New UIO airport scheduled for Feburary 20th, 2013

I just landed back to ATL from UIO and the latest is the New Quito International Airport now wrapping construction, will encompass an area of 1,500 hectares or 3,700 acres - 10 times the present airport - have a lower altitude, a 4,100 meter runway with ATC & CAT1 clearance, 700 spaces, will accommodate over 4 million passengers annually, and have a large runway with two taxiways, able to handle 44 operations/hr. Its passenger terminal at 38,000 square meters is to have 7 boarding gates with 20 aircraft spaces; 50 airline counter; and room for expansion. Mariscal Sucre Airport ceases operations the day before and will be dismantled and turned over for public or private land development which will likely be a city park. www.aeropuertoquito.aero

Update.... Just got back from the new UIO and it is very remote. About a 1 hr taxi ride to downtown ($25 each way). Check in is simple with LAN/DL/AA all visible. Johnny Rockets and TGIF eats pre-departure. Duty free will give 30% off in 3 months for airline employees. Security is effortless with shoes on and water can clear.

You just reminded me about DUTY FREE. I bought a few gifts for the ladies, on my wife's side of family as I was flying over there. I had no idea employees got a discount on the goods there. It was like 20 percent off. From what I spent there, it saved me something substantial. Also, Johnny Rockets is pretty cool. I like the music in there, and the one right on the bottom of the hotel I stayed in QC at Eastwood Village was great for a root beer float and a chicken sandwich. Pricey but really good. Ecuador is on my list to go.

You won't. It's all about money. They want you to purchase water via the stores in the airport. Then they want to take it away from you as you check into the gate in some places. It's all about money. I wonder how many TSA guys have stock in airport bottled water?

LOL! Dead on 29P! Ran into a Ramper in GSP 2 summers ago and I said" That humidity down there must kill you". He replyed, " I'm good. Another dummy will forget about their water and we will pass it around the breakroom".

Update...DL upgrades to a 757-200 from a 737-7 due to summer load factors and longer new runway.
