Southwest Airlines has filed today an application with the U.S. Department of transportation (DOT) to start flights from OAK to SJD and PVR, thus becoming the first American carrier to serve these routes. If approved, flights would start in February 2017.

“Linking the San Francisco Bay Area to these popular Mexican beach resort areas with time-saving itineraries brings our Customers low-fare and high-value service that is an exciting addition to our growing international portfolio,” said Leah Koontz, Southwest Vice President.

Southwest Airlines already announced flights to both Mexican cities from LAX, set to start on November 6, 2016, as part of its international expansion out of LAX that commenced this year with a service to LIR.

Currently, Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris is the sole carrier that offers scheduled services from Oakland to four Mexican cities—Guadalajara, León, Morelia, and Tijuana—plus a seasonal flight to Mexico City.
