    Default NYC in January?

Why not? Check out Hotel Week in Manhattan:
Hotel Week - Nancy J. Friedman Public Relations
Some incredible deals for a romantic trip, maybe a visit to the Freedom Tower? Maybe a short visit to soak up some artsy-fartsy culcha, or gourmet chompathon? Maybe an empty-suitcase run for post -Christmas markdowns? Or a combination of Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster in Harlem, Intrepid tour, then Circle Line boat cruise, followed by a ticket to 42nd Street or Les Miserables on Bway or the Rockettes? The city is waiting....It's up to you--New York, New York (kick line, please)

Hmm, during a typical January in NY, I'd much rather be on a Caribbean island or any place else WARM!

Considering that my profession held a MAJOR market right after Jan first, I was STUCK having to be there. It was the worst of times in my book, but req'd.

I stopped worrying about the weather at my destination a long time ago. If there are interesting things to do and there are empty seats, I go anyway. I say why not NYC in January?

Careful what you wish for...THE BLIZZARD OF 1996 - THE OVERVIEW - NEW YORK SHUT BY WORST STORM IN 48 YEARS - EAST IS BURIED, VIRGINIA TO MASSACHUSETTS - NYTimes.com
You know it's bad when the only place open is a souvenir store on 5th Ave is the only place open! Pretty sure they slept there the night before. In those days office bldgs controlled thermostat settings by law. Couldn't even get Sunday Times to do my crossword. I bought a snow globe for my GF who collects them. Had to get some "fun" out of the situation! Good thing I sold gloves, scarves, etc then--I had plenty to keep warm--along w/my burgundy faux mink coat...
