    Default Newbie Questions

I hope this is the right place for my questions, I'm new to nonrev.net too and tried to find the right spot!

I'm getting a few UAL buddy passes from a friend of a friend and I have a couple of questions I'm trying to avoid bugging her with:

    1) I've flown Delta quite a bit using buddy passes and pass flyers can only standby on Delta flights using Delta equipment. Does UAL have the same rule for buddy passes and/or enrolled employees? Assuming that Continental flights/equipment would be included with that? (I have no idea if everything is officially changed over, forgive me) Or can I fly on a code-share flight?

    2) UAL employees no longer get hit with the Y-fare as a bonus, right? Maybe this was never true, but I read somewhere that if the Y-fare was, for example, $600 the UAL employee would have that listed as a bonus on their paycheck and therefore have to pay taxes on it...I want to be sure that is no longer the case or be sure to budget in an extra "incentive" for my friend.

    3) Does UAL put buddy pass flyers in first or business if there is space? At Delta this is pretty much a given, unless you've somehow royally p'd off the gate agent or wore ripped up jeans and tube top

    4) Any other hints you want to share, I'm all ears!

    Happy travels!

JennyGo, Continental no longer exists so the buddy passes would be good on all United flights, including united express (regional) flights. The thing in item 2 about paying taxes on a flight mostly concerns enrolled friends. IRS rules have any enrolled friends have to pay imputed income on there flights-similar to your $600 example. I am not sure but I think if it is a 3 cabin aircraft (first/business/coach) you could get moved into business on a buddy pass.

I liked Delta's buddy passes because the buddy could call Delta on the airport courtisy phones and make changes to their flights if needed. I am not sure if you can do something like that on United.

One other tip is to check positive space ticket pricing. Traveling overseas from the U.S. is sometimes really close in cost between buddy and positive space that it would not be worth the hassle of standby

Thanks Tony. Good to know about the enrolled friend...seems like I'll just stick with the passes! So no code-share with other airlines though, right?

I'm not sure I understand about positive space. I thought this was for airline employees only flying on company business.

The new UAL program seems to be an improvement from what was, but IMO they could dumb it down like Delta's and it'd be better for everyone!
