    Default What's a transoceanic flight day?

    So, for example, is ATL-DXB 1 day, or a 1/2 of a day.
    Would ATL-AMS-BOM and ATL-NRT-BKK be 2?
    What about, say ATL-LIM, or ATL-SXM?

    Basically, how does delta define the oceans and flight days?

    Thanks so much. I am brand spanking new to all this! I don't even have access to travelnet yet!

    24 hour flight day--no such thing as 1/2 flight day
    ATL/DXB one flight day (either way)
    ATL/AMS/BOM one day only if you you do not overnight--I don't believe that will be an option unless the 2nd leg departs inside the 24 hr window
    ATL/NRT/BKK one day if no overnight (watch your travelnet charges after the fact--mistakes do happen--up to you to monitor and contact if not correct)
    ATL/LIM or ATL/SXM one flight day and there are system and transoceanic options. As soon as you can, get on travelnet and read, read, read! If you have questions after that, list them and call the pass bureau (not when it's irops, please!) for information--take notes!

    I can help also, as until October 1, we had 6 transoceanic flight days per year.

    They are over an ocean, so to Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia.
    Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Central America, and South America did not count.
    Inter Asia also did not count.

    My guess would be that since one traveling across an ocean like the Pacific which takes some 8 hrs from say Seattle, USA to Narita, Japan and jumping into a day forward because of the IDL. Kind of shoots the day away that you could otherwise be doing something like working, or shopping or whatever you do besides sitting on a plane for 8 hours, plus give or take another 3-4 hours getting to the airport, going through security, or getting to and from the airport so that now makes it a 12 hour day. Being you crossed an ocean, and the time difference between West Coast and Japan is a day FORWARD since you crossed the international date line, and the times are hours apart. Like day and night different. So it makes sense that a TRANSOCEANIC FLIGHT DAY.....(I've never heard it called that way) may mean dealing with time zones and International Date Line being crossed. Best way to follow all that confusion is utilizing GREENWICH MEAN TIME or (GMT) also known as COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME (UTC) and also known as ZULU TIME. Utilizing either one of these methods are exactly the same. World is divided into 24 time zones. Greenwich England is at 0 GMT. In the East Coast, you subtract 5 hours, (Because you are going through 5 time zones at one hour per time zone each) minus 6 hours in Central Time, 7 hours minus at Rocky Mountain Time, and so forth..... This also depends on daylights savings time which is seasonal so at times East coast is -5 hours and sometimes changes to -6 hours. and so forth.

    V--I don't know what DL flight privs OP has w/DGS. The good part of a flight day now w/Delta is the 24 hr definition that has nothing to do with datelines.
    I used to have companion privs and had limited number TOs which meant TransPac and TransAt. However, once used, I could fly to Central America/Carib/Mex--go figger! When I used my TOs (mostly RT EU) I had to chose those destinations in what DL called "system flights". That was pre-NW and certainly has changed, but so has my status as spouse!

    My apologies, got caught in the terminology, "Transoceanic flight day", not paying attention to how your respective airline "Delta" defines a "Flight Day". I humbly withdraw.

    Haha, I ran into the nonrev prayer during my searchers. As for my job, I've just started to push people around in wheelchairs for DGS as a part-time gig during college -- so not the most exciting thing in the world, but hey, maybe I'll get to go to some cool places.

    Another question:

    Why is it that there are sometimes more available seats than authorized seats (i.e. 10 Av 5 Au)? I think I've only seen this happen for business seats.

    I am guessing we all have the same question. It's rare but seems to be a market-sensitive issue. Maybe anticipation of system-wide upgrade requests from medallions? Maybe predicted overselling in coach and revs being upgraded to accommodate the peons? Or PO flights--weight/balance? I wonder if anyone can enlighten us.

    I most recently saw it JFK-ZRH... maybe RA doesn't like to sit next to anyone :P

    But coach was empty too... maybe predicted SWU does have something to do with it, or maybe it's one of those upgrades at check in? Anyone have experience listing on those flights?
