Looks like Continental has agreed to join the Star Alliance.

Does this mean workers at Contiental can fly on United and vice versa, or are alliances different from mergers in that sense?

Alliances are different. At DL, we get ZED on Korean(Skyteam, with DL), same as we get ZED on USair(Star Alliance). Alliances don't mean much for nonrevs.

So, I guess that means CO is out of skyteam.

There are some advantages to non-revs within alliances. At oneworld the eligibility is better within the alliance, and pretty consistent across the board . AA registered companions, for example, are eligible for travel on all the oneworld carriers, but not on non-oneworld airlines. Also within oneworld, oneworld employees are boarded ahead of non-oneworld employees.

It will actually help us Continental nonrevs. Some of the carriers in Star alliance we do not have ticketing agreements with. Once this is established we will be able to establish nonrev agreements. We will probably see ZED fares with United instead of ID90's and even worse ID75 for our parents. This will really help those of us who travel to Hawaii. United now has 30 flights a day where Continental only has 4.
