I was watching on tv how this guy didn't buy two seats in SWA and was forced to leave the airplane, because he apparantly couldn't fit on his seat. Apparantly the guy was able to buckle and no complaints were brought to him but somehow, he was still kicked off the plane. Is this a case of airlines going too far? Isn't seating tight enough? I think alot of airlines use alot of excuses when they start losing money but their bottom line is to pack people in planes like sardines to get the most out of their customers. The way I see it, people pay doctors alot of money to "Listen to their sins" about how much they eat or smoke, but in the end, doctors just don't want to do anything but take your money and not give you good remedies. They've become talkers and listeners but not "DOERS". The insurance companies have taken control on everything and they are the bottom line dictators of how you get treated. Now the airlines wants you to be skinny so that they can pack more people on their planes, and make the big guy pay for two seats. Their attitude is "Its not my problem if Harry choses a life style of eating big macs and fries". What do you think about this?

While it is unfortunate that some people are of a larger stature, that's how it is sometimes. Some people become that way through their lifestyle, others have conditions that are out of their hands. I would not like to be the gentleman that cannot safely occupy 1 seat, but I also would not like to have half a seat for myself. Each passenger pays for 1 seat. One entire seat. If I take up even 51% of 2 seats, I should purchase both of those seats, as the pax next to me is only getting 49% of the pair, while he/she paid for 50%. If I want to build an additon on my house, I cannot just build onto my neighbors property. I must keep it in my own, or purchase the land I require. It's the exact same with seats in a plane. Unfortunately, the lowest unit of airline seat is ONE seat, so if you only "spill over" just a little, you must purchase an entire extra seat.

Aside from the comfort factor there is the safety factor. I've never had to evacuate an aircraft, and I hope I never do. Should that ever happen, I don't want to be stuck behind a fellow passenger that cannot get out of his/her seat quickly enough to facilitate my evactuation. That may come off harsh, but that's the case. Very similar situation with security issues. I'd rather have my feelings hurt, and other passengers have their feelings hurt by security procedures, than see another terrorist attack, or, God forbid, be a victim of one.

Again, I do feel for people that cannot control their size. If airlines choose to make their seats larger to accomodate larger pax, that is their choice. The current seats accomodate the vast majority of our population w/ no issues. Airlines continue to reseat passengers at no charge should there be an open seat on a flight, sometimes at the expense of nonrevs. I cannot be reseated just because I want the extra space. No matter how full the flight, if a passenger occupies more than one seat, they should purchase more than one seat.

Again, I apologize if this comes off harsh...

I gotta go the same route as Avs
I have had POS pax next to me who can buckle belt and put down armrest--but they still have spilled over under the armrest into my space and that is not acceptable for anyone.
The issue of how fast they can get that belt/rest up/open is a HUGE issue (no pun intended about their girth/size) for SAFETY of all pax--if they are blocking ME--I'm going OVER if I have to. They do NOT have additional or special rights--it is not a handicap situation--these people made a choice to be fat (THEY CAN CONTROL THEIR SIZE--sorry I disagree Avs) and they need to deal with the consequences--no one else should have to suffer for their obesity.
I don't apologize for my opinion.

I'm a pretty big guy at about 6' even and just shy of 250 lbs, last time I weighed myself (which I'll admit was a while ago, and I've lost a little weight studying abroad). For the metric folk, that's 113kg and 183cm. I've always been able to fit into a seat without any problem. Usually, I even have a backpack under the seat in front of me. And you know what? I fit in just fine, armrest down, no bother to anyone else. The worst situation I've ever been in was AirEuropa, which had really wide armrests. It's not so much that I couldn't sit, just that it was a little awkward to get in and it was a lot easier to raise the armrest just to get in. Sure, a couple more inches would be nice (that's what she- oh, never mind) but for a flight that lasts a few hours, if you can't suck it up you can buy another seat.

Edit: Oh, and Southwest's policy is probably best when actually followed. You get a chance to "prove yourself" as being able to fit. If you need 2 seats, you pay for a second seat. If the flight isn't full, you get a refund for that second seat.

We flew DTW/CUN on an A320. Noticed a paying pax up front and he could barely fit into his seat. No way could he fly in coach and for sure no baby jet!

Drunk, fat, now too smelly to fly
" An American flyer was ejected from a Jazz Air flight.........because his body odour was deemed too offensive"

I guessing this wasn't just yesterday's bourbon and cigarettes.

"Unlike the 76er that takes an "Take no prisoner on fat bodies" stand, I like to give the fat bodies a little more leeway, depending on the individual situation."

From what I've seen of this obnoxious, foul-mouthed fat man is that he should stay out of the public [eye and ear] with his personal issues.
If he can behave like a civil adult, whether he is too obese to fit in a coach seat, or not, then he should apologize to the people who had to listen to his trash talking and buy a seat that fits his girth.
What makes him an exception--his abusive language and lack of common courtesy? Not in my book.
