Thumbs up Mardi Gras -Parade Tips

Mardi Gras isn’t one day, it’s a season and the season has already started - Jan. 6; but things really rev up the two weekends before Fat Tuesday - Feb. 28.
BTW, the NBA All-Star game is Feb.19 but it’s an all-star week-end event.

    Parade Schedule

2017 Mardi Gras Parade Schedule | Mardi Gras New Orleans

    Parade Do’s and Don’ts
    Do
Look at the route maps. The larger parades the ones with the marching bands and elaborate floats don’t go down Bourbon street, it’s too small.
    Don’t
Past up an opportunity to go to the restroom
    Pay for beads
Cross Canal Street/St. Charles/Basin (or any street) during a parade -I don’t care who or what is on the other side)
Pay to park in someone’s yard

    Stand behind horse

    Laissez les bons temps rouler!

This is on my list of must-dos. One of these days I will plan far enough ahead to actually attend the celebration!

More Mardi Gras Do’s and Don’ts
    Do
dress up and blend in…it’s alot fun

start your day having beignets at Café du Monde
go early, crowds can be 5, 10 deep.
wear a backpack, great for water and snacks, plus it’ll hold all the throws you’re gonna catch.
stand behind a ladder on the parade route, kids are usually put on the ladders so they can see, and most little kids are lousy at catching throws *wink*

    Don’t ..
stand, or walk through puddles in the French Quarter.

Beignets and chicory coffee is served.

And to help Donna get a jump on her Mardi Gras planning:

Future Mardi Gras - Fat Tuesday dates
    2018 – Feb. 13
    2019 – Mar. 5
    2020 – Feb. 25

Now a little something from the Forum’s Vault
YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM NEW ORLEANS WHEN....

the four seasons in your year are: crawfish, shrimp, crab and King Cake.

you assume everyone has mosquito swarms in their backyard

your sunglasses fog up when you step outside.

you take Community coffee and Hot Sauce with you on vacation.
your last name isn't pronounced the way it's spelled.

"up north", refers to places like Shreveport or Little Rock, where it gets really really cold.

you didn't realize until high school what a county is.

you judge a po-boy by the number of napkins used.

    you know what "dressed" means

you know the best doughnuts are square and have no holes.

when someone says magazine you think street instead of periodical.

you don't worry when you see ships riding higher than the top of your house.

every so often you have waterfront property.

you like your rice and your politics dirty.

you don't bat an eye when someone says, "make groceries, or "grind meat".
while watching a movie filmed in New Orleans you say things like "there's no way you can run out of a cemetery onto Bourbon street"

your directions use terms like "uptown", "downtown", "backatown" and "across the river".
you always ask for a little lagniappe.

you don't keep newspaper for recycling, but for tablecloths at crawfish boils.

you think purple, gold and green look really good together.
And finally you know you're from New Orleans when you can pronouce Tchoupitoulas, Melpomene, Thibideaux and Dirgenois
