That sound of rejoicing heard Thursday in hundreds of United Airlines airplane galleys around the world was prompted by news the Chicago-based airline soon will start serving Illy coffee on board after more than three years of offering FreshBrew, a coffee brand based in Houston, Texas.
Even before United announced the coffee vendor change yesterday, the carrier conceded it had fielded complaints from customers about FreshBrew, which was introduced on all United flights after the merger of United and Continental in 2010 to form United Continental Holdings.
FreshBrew had been served on Continental Airlines for many years, but was only introduced on legacy United flights after the merger and after Continental CEO Jeff Smisek was named CEO of the merged carriers.
Smisek abruptly resigned from United in September, amid allegations he was possibly connected to a federal probe of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
