I have a condo available for a week in Mombasa, Kenya that I am hoping to visit in July 2007. I would be trying to non-rev in from Bangkok, Thailand via Nairobi. I'm looking for any information on Mombasa? How difficult is non-reving to Nairobi in July? How is the best way to get from Nairobi to Mombasa -- anyone know anything about the train? I've never been to Africa before and would really appreciate any info I can get.
Thank you,
Mark

Hi... easiest way to travel from NBO to MBA is of course by air with KQ. The shuttle service runs almost hourly and uses a B737 fleet.
The train is an 'experience' which I have done many times. A first class ticket (read no chickens and goats in your carriage!) will set you back around KSH5000 return and includes a meal in the dining carriage, and a clean and neat cabin. This is NOT by any stretch of the imagination a modern service. Be prepared for basic. It is noteworthy that there have been questions raised over the safety of the train and rumours that it is no longer insured. AYOR...

Thank you. I appreciate the info. Do you know if there is a way to book the train tickets on-line? or do you have to wait till you arrive in Nairobi? Does it tend to seel out?

Best to buy tickets when there, however, I did just google this link, "http://www.eastafricashuttles.com/train.htm".
Please note that I know NOTHING about this organisation - but in case it helps...
If you are staying at a hotel the concierge can arrange it for you, otherwise there are tens of travel agencies in town (Kenyatta Avenue boasts a few) which will be able to book them for you.
