Just realised you're based in BAH - funnily enough i'm headed there for training in Oct. Any suggestions on what to do/see after class or where to avoid etc? I keep reading about unsavoury characters in hotel bars. Still don't know where i'm staying mind you, station manager won't confirm until one month out but I dare say it will be the crew hotel.

Also what do your (BA) flights run like in early Oct BAHLHR/LHRBAH... full or not so much? I have 5 days off before the training so company will pay me to get to BAH then I can do what I like until class date. I can take GF too but don't know if I really want to... have you flown them? I'm going to Sweden and trying to avoid LHR due the taxes, but AMS is my only other choice and that has 1 flt/day vs 3 to LHR.

Pity I can't send you a private message as info about BAH doesn't sit too well here!

5 days in BAH.

Hire a car - not too expensive approx $30 a day. The island is small and easy to get around. Driving is a bit erractic to say the least and drive on the right (or any bit that is empty http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e...#>/biggrin.gif ) Fuel is dirt cheap - about 30 cents a litre! Taxis can be expensive and the drivers will try to get away with not using the meter. You can insist - it is the law.

Bahrain Fort is worth a visit. There is a small museum which has the headsets to listen to, to find out about the fort's history.

Bahrain Museum is very good

Grand Mosque - allows non Moslems in, outside of prayer times. Free guided tour

Bahrain Souk is a must see for all the materials and spices and gold shops

There is a new water park - Lost Paradise of Dilmun - with all the usual slides. If you get there when it opens at 10am, you'll miss the crowds. We went and didn't queue once. Gets busier at about 2pm.

Cocktails at Trader Vics at the Ritz - bit pricey but large enough to be good value.

As with every place, there are the seedier areas. If you stick to the 5 star hotel bars, you'll be fine. For dining, there is an area in Adliya which caters for most palates. JJ's bar is good. Not sure which are the good nightclubs nowadays - it's been a while!

I'm actually not going to be there for 5 days, it's kinda complicated. Basically once every 5 week pattern I work 9 days straight and we then get 5 days off. The day i'm due to return is the day I would have to leave to BAH, so basically i'm allowed to leave earlier than that and CX will get me to BAH only. Then rather than stay there the 5 days I plan on jumping on BA/GF/KL to LHR/AMS and onward to GOT to meet some friends for a few days. I could jump on a euro flight straight outa HKG, but a) i'd have to pay more than a zed bah-lhr-got and B ) i'd be in Y class when I can get to BAH in J http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e...DIR#>/wink.gif

The crew hotel i've since found out is the Diplomat Radisson SAS Hotel, and the training is most likely conducted there or at our cargo office at the airport. Not sure how far apart these two are.

The actual training will run for 3 days, so I will arrive the night before, have 2 afternoons/nights to check the place out after class, then leave at 7pm the 3rd night to HKG. Hopefully I can fit in some of your suggestions!

As for driving... last time I drove on the right in Texas I nearly collected most of the cars in my path. Possibly not a good idea haha.

The Dip is a good hotel - approx 10 mins from airport. Fidlers Green Irish Pub is a good venue for a bevvy.

BA flights should be OK at that time of year but try to avoid Wed/Thursday nights as they can be busy. We have a B747 on the route.

Let me know your plans closer to the time although I may be off to London in October - I look after a charity in BAH called Dreamflight which takes poorly kids on dream holidays to Florida. Its a UK based charity and we have managed to secure a couple of places for Bahraini kids for the past 9 years. HKG also gets two places so you may have heard of it.

Just my luck it would be a Wed/Thurs night I want to leave BAH! I'd arrive on CX around 8pm then be trying the BA and/or GF LHR flights. Have you flown Gulf Air?

If those are full I might try my luck with KLM. Last time they upgraded me on staff travel, and I have a friend at CX in AMS I wouldn't mind meeting for a coffee between flights. Will come down to loads though in the end.

Dreamflight seems quite interesting - I haven't heard of it but I just checked out the site. So do BA offer a plane and services or do you wet lease it through fundraising? How did you get involved?

We seem to do a lot of local charity work in HKG for children who live on Lantau island where the airport is. The latest I think was when we took some of them for a flight in one of our new 777-300ERs around HKG. Staff do English speaking courses once a week at CX City as well I think, and cargo aid shipments sometimes. A lot happens at the hub, but doesn't appear as much at the spokes.

Out of curiosity are you British or Bahraini?

A few too many Aussies in Bali for my liking. I like to go on holiday where i'm not surrounded with my own kind, if that makes any sense (hence why I'm not the biggest fan of London either). Also Bali isn't terribly safe, but then neither was Egypt I guess so par for the course.

Singapore and Fiji are nice, $$ though. I have always wanted to go to Thailand - definately on my list. But it is so close I tend to want to venture farther afield.

As for PNG... not in my lifetime. Port Moresby is one of the world's most dangerous cities!

Venue change... Hotel Movenpick - any good?

Need to try and make EK840 dep 1750 now... hope course finishes early that day!
