hi, i will be going to hawaii the end of jan and will return on feb 08. i have a standby ticket on american for hnl to dfw then dfw to mem. our corp travel dept told me i should be ok since there are 2 flights to dfw on american each day then 4 or 5 from dfw to mem each day. should i get a standby ticket on another airline as well? any suggestions are welcome.

Personally I always recommend a backup. Most passes are refundable anyway, so if you don't use them you're not out anything. January/February are good times to travel to Hawaii. This period is slow, second only to September/October.
If you're flying from MEM have you checked loads on NW? While they don't offer nonstops to HNL from MEM there are connections thru DTW, MSP and LAX that might be available to you.
Something I always recommend...
Can you easily get to LAX? There are numerous airlines and charters that offer service to the islands - more than most airports in the country combined. AA offers 4 daily to HNL alone. Not to memtion HA, NW, UA and TZ. With backup passes this might be an option.
Bottom line? Keep it simple. If the AA connection works then take it. But remember to check loads from time to time to make sure you don't get stuck and need a backup.

Ahhhh HNL. One of the true black holes for non-revvers. Nonrevs of the female single kind have been known to go there for a flight and get married, have a kid and be divorced by the time they actually get on a flight.
Back ups and then more of them is the way to treat HNL unless you have access to detailed lists that show you stand a good chance.
I know on my carrier last October it took me 4 days to get through HNL as there were upwards to 100 nonrevvers each flight.
(Although I almost bought a USD99.00 one way web special on HA for a mainland flight. At that price for confirmed seating, why would you bother with nonrev if those sort of offers are still there?)

At the moment it sounds greater than it actually is. WN will be codesharing on ATA flights to HNL from MDW only. If it works we'll expand it to other cities.
We bought certain assets of TZ out of bankruptcy. We gave them a load of cash, provided financing for their operations and offered them a codeshare deal on our flights. All in all, between the 2 carriers, there are about 200 new routes that came of the codeshare. We get access to airports where we'd rather eat dirt than fly to (LGA, DCA, etc.) plus 8 new gates at MDW (which will become the primary focus for growth in 2005), HNL was just a little icing. Plus we get ATA's MDW maintenance hanger. Even if ATA ultimately fails the gates and hanger were more than worth it. If ATA succeeds then we get a good partner for the future. Upon imergence from Chapter 11 SWA will take about a 30% stake in ATA. HDQs says it will liquidate the holding over time but that remains to be seen.
In the coming years I think we'll see SWA flying to the islands itself. This may just be the first of a series of tests.

LOL. Well I could reply with something totally expected, like "I've never had a problem in the past getting leid and certainly don't have to pay for it" .................................................. ......................... but I won't.
(PS - It's Japanese only night every night from what I could see !!)

This is a complete right indicator, U-turn, and heading the other way on the I-10 from the topic at hand, but it's an interesting move by WN. I know in the past they took Morris etc, but this is something much different.
I'd like to think that over the next 12-18 months, the ATA flying scheduled will slowly dwindle and they'll become the lesiure carrier for WN on the Carribbean, Mexican type routes leaving WN to do what it does best. Connect the dots between the unjammed places.

Yes, indeed we are quite off topic. But then we do that regularly.
However, it is a complete u-turn for WN to do such a thing. Most people I've talked to are excited by the prospects but have definitely noticed the slight drift in corp. philosophy, as it does pose some risk. No one is really worried but some, including me, are raising eyebrows.
