We are planning to travel to NAN for the first time on 9/17 for about 10 days. I ordered a book by Rob Kay about all the Fijian Islands and it has been very helpful. My question to anyone out there is if you could help us with any advice on do's/dont's, accomodations, etc.

Fiji in mid to late September through into early October will be over-run with families on Spring vacation break from Australia and New Zealand.
Do take everything with a grain of salt, do get used to & just accept "island time" is a fact of life, (where a "Yes we can do that" can mean "we can do that but it may be tomorrow, 2 hours, two weeks), do go and enjoy the culture/heritage, do go with open minds and accept the smiles and inquisitive questioning from the locals as real genuine queries and not people passing plain old pleasantries.
Don't get stressed about things being worked on on "island time", don't expect everything to be hunky dorey and working to plan, don't get sucked in by the "artists" selling their wares!
In short, a beautiful nation with beautiful people for the most part, which is true for all the South Pac island nations. Just avoid all the spring breaking Ozzies and Kiwis with kids!

I wanted to get your opinion on staying at the Sheraton Royal Denarau Resort for at least 1 night (@ $170/us dol) since our flight will be arriving at 0500 and we will be rather exhausted from our 10+ hrs. in flight. I'm thinking this would allow me the opportunity to research other accomodations in the area and possibly find something more appealing or less costly. What's your take on this?

The Sheraton's are fine & fairly close to Nadi. If it's just a bed/shower/refresh you are after there are cheaper, closer hotels to the airport that may fit the bill.
Alternately, I'd look at going to one of the island resorts on your first day to really unwind for a couple of days. Then when you are fit in mind and body again, you can tackle the mainland.

There are a lot of cheaper smaller hotels close to the airport that give airline discounts and are fairly cheap - the Tokatoka, the Tanoa, the Mocambo.
Last time we stayed at the Sonaisali for 3 nights which was a lovely island resort (it is only about 250m from the shore but there isn't a bridge so you get a boat across) and it is only a 20 - 25 minute bus ride from the airport.
