Personally I have only gone 1 way but it might be best for you to clarify what your intention is? Meaning, are you aiming specifically for the jump seat for the experience, or are the flights you are looking at too tight and so wondering what your chances are?
Also which carrier are you intending to try it on? QF for example has recently tightened regulations (well Aust Aviation Law has tightened I should say) which forbids travel on the flight deck by anyone other than QF staff.. not even techie's families can do it anymore.
