I'm hoping to take my family of four to SE Asia in late June/early August. We have not used ZED travel before so I'm wondering about the best way to go about trying to get information on loads with carriers like Thai, Quantas and Cathay.
More specifically, I'm looking at (TG791)JFK-BKK on 20 July, (TG411) BKK-SIN around 24 July, then (QF32) SIN-SYD around 28 July and (QF149, or 107 or 11) SYD-LAX on 3 Aug.
Any suggestions from you are greatly appreciated. Travel dates are flexible.
By the way, how's the weather in Sydney in August? Thanks.
Bob

you can call the airlines directly and ask if they have a non-rev listing number if not then ask how u go about getting listed and checking loads. Most of us have systems where we can check loads on other carriers, it's not 100% accurate like the airline itself but usually at least 90-95%. The days you listed are too far ahead to actually check right now. Far as weather goes you may get an idea from someone else on this board that lives there. Also flying standby with no priority along with 3 other people is disaster in the making.

August in SYD will be cool to cold in the evenings (well, my definition of cold anyway given our winter is very tame compared to Northern winters!) but the days should be fine - good for light sweater type clothing.
SIN-SYD may be very hard to get on given the European summer vacation traffic and SIN being a major hub between SE Asia/Sth Pac and Europe. Just have lot's of backups planned - QF in particular often has it's own staff backed up in SIN for days on end in peak periods.
One thing I've noticed is you have one heck of a lot of travelling crammed into a very short space of time. Everyone knows we live at the rear end of the earth and it's a long way down here, but people just don't realise exactly how far it really is until they get off the flights. If you have young ones with you, you will need to plan a day or two of adjustment to time zones and certainly to combat jet-lag. This will impact on your leisure and itinerary time. Whilst it may be a once in a lifetime thing for many, it's such a long way to get here and such a big place to see, one has to weigh seeing as much as one can in very limited time against length of time planned.

Thanks to all for your insight. I am willing to take a reasonable risk when flying standby, but I do not want a nightmare for my family! It's premature to look at loads for late July, so I'll just have to wait a while.

Hi Bob,
Just had a look at those QF flights for you so to give you some idea at the moment the QF32 SIN-SYD on 28 July has under 80 seats and the QF149 & 11 SYD-LAX on 3 Aug have over 200 seats.
