Hey everyone!
I have a couple weeks vacation time I'm hoping to use for a trip to Australia (SYD/CNS are the places I'd like to go). Right now I'm planning to have off the last two weeks of Oct. I'm still in the very preliminary planning stages but I was wondering if that is generally a good time to travel from the US?
Also, is it fairly easy go go SYD/CNS?
Thanks!

Hi Kristin welcome aboard.
Al, the Australia correspondent, has two articles about traveling in Australia, both excellent by the way. They should get you going in the right direction... south right? http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emotic...on_biggrin.gif

Al will probably be along to answer your questions but in the mean time if you haven't seen them here are 2 articles he contributed. Click below and see "No Worries..." and "Getting Around...", this might offer some good advice.

Hey Kristin, I am also leaving the last week of October and traveling to SYD, MEL and CNS. Do you have any good hotel ideas you have heard for sydney? Any other tips you have gleaned from others? In Sydney we are just planning on doing the typical tourist stuff and going to featherdale wild life center...Anybody know can we get a bus to there or do we need to rent a car for a day?
In Cairnes we have a condo rented for a week and plan to snorkle and more snorkle and one helicopter ride... Same question to anyone out there... good snorkle/ helicopter operators you mighht reccomend? Hope to see you there. MTNEST

Try checking out www.tidd.com.au as they often have good travel industry deals for accomodation etc in Australia. Email the hotels shown to get up to date rates. For Cairns area look under the attractions for Reef Magic Cruises who offer Industry Discounts ( I got the 'intro' diving trip and snorkeling for the price of the normal snorkeling trip ). If you want to stay on the beach Palm Cove is a nice quiet place just outside Cairns. Details about the local buses around Palm Cove and Cairns can be found here http://www.sunbus.com.au. and may give you an idea of where to stay if you do not have a car and want to have access to the bus routes.

Good heavens. I really need to do an update on the first one - it's badly out of date. Still has mentions of Ansett in it for heaven's sake.

Hi Kristin - welcome aboard.
Not sure about loads Southbound from the U.S. to Oz in October, but you shouldn't have any problems getting back from here to there at that time of year.
You didn't mention which carrier you are with, so I'll throw out a few different suggestions for you.
CO - flies 3 x weekly GUM-CNS with AirMike.
QF - flies up to 7 daily LAX-SYD/MEL/BNE/AKL & 3 times weekly HNL-SYD.
UA - flies 1 x LAX-SYD and 1 x SFO-SYD daily.
NZ - flies several daily LAX-AKL & SFO-AKL. From AKL untold options across the ditch into Oz.
AC - flies 1 x daily YVR-HNL-SYD.
HA - flies 4 x weekly HNL-SYD.
There are other untold options via the Far East or Asia as well, including JAL serving both SYD and CNS. There are not a lot of options to/from CNS on international routes so you may need to backtrack to/from SYD or BNE. Internally, QF flies almost everywhere, however a lot of their leisure destinations (like CNS) have been handed over to a low cost subsidiary Jetstar & interline rates/zed's do *not* apply.
I would check virginblue.com.au, jetstar.com and qantas.com to get bargain revenue ticket deals to travel internally.
Cheers.

Yeah the article is a little dated, but still is excellent and worth a look, I recommend it all the time. http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Golden bananas-truth or fiction?
Al the media here is reporting that there is a shortage of bananas in Australia, is this true... because I know a guy, that knows a guy... http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emotic...on_biggrin.gif

Very much so - one of the recent cyclones (Hurricanes in your-speak!) earlier this year wiped out most of the crop in Queensland. Haven't bought any for a while, but the ones that are in the shops are astronomically priced. Makes petrol/gas seem like peanuts !!
