Am I nuts? Should we try? We (my wifie and I) are looking at ZEDing on Eva and/or China Air, LAX-TPE-DPS and back around 1/22. Any input would be appreciated. I'll be asking for specific loads when the time comes. Thanks!

That is a long way, but I mean to tell you, it will definately be very worth it. Bali is great. One of my favorites. I was there three times, and loved it every time. I was last there in 1999. I was working in Saipan, which was about a 6 hour flight. Thing about Bali is the latest bombings there from radical Islamist. LEGIAN street I must have walked around about a hundred times up and down. That was the scene of an attack that killed over 200 Ausies around 2003. I thank God I wasn't there when that happened. Don't let that stop you but I would stay away from large FOREIGN crowds at the bars. Go north to UBUD or elsewhere around the island. Go see BARONG volcano.
We've got a Bali article at

Thanks for the input. I've been there once, my wife twice, and we love it. We were based in Ubud both times. This time we're visiting a cousin of mine who has a house up north in Tejukala (I think that's the name).
I was looking more for input from non-revers about the advisability of Jan 1 travel.

Hi all. We are back, and the trip was great.
Non-rev side: LAX-TPE-DPS-TPE-LAX( that's LA, Taipei, Denpasar) we got all 4 flights we wanted on EVA and China Air. though they were not generous with first or business class seats, but can beggars be choosers? Going over (14 hours!) my wife & I were lucky enough to get 3 seats each, so we slept plenty.
Bali side: great as always. Besides the incredible luck of being able to spend 12 days at my cousin's seaside house on the unspoiled north shore, we also managed three mini-stays: first 2 days at fishing village called Jemeluk near Amed, with the best reef snorkeling right from te beach I've ever seen anywhere, then 2 days in the beautiful area on the south slpe of Mt. Agung, near Bessaki temple, and finally 3 days in our old favorite, Ubud, where we found a dirt-cheap ($15/night for 2, incl brkfst) bungalows in a spectacular ravine setting : Gusti's Bungalows. The Balinese we met were wonderful, friendly, and hospitable as always.
