HKG and NRT Non Rev and Proof of Onward Travel

Hello, I would like to go to non rev to HKG, then while I am in HKG, I want to purchase a real ticket to NRT. Then from NRT non-rev back to SEA.

I don't want to pre-purchase the HKG - NRT ticket in case I don't make the flight to HKG. But this means I will not have proof of onward travel when I arrive into HKG.

My questions are:

1) Can I book a Non Rev ticket from HKG - SEA simply for proof of onward travel out of HKG? or do I need to purchase a refundable confirmed ticket out of HKG? I will not enter China at any time.
2) I usually book a hotel after landing. Will I need proof of hotel reservations when I land in HKG or can I book after I land?
3) Is a Non Rev ticket out of NRT an acceptable form of onward travel for Japan?

Any and all help would be great.

Hi, Liza. Welcome to Nonrev.net. Are you US citizen? If so, you have no reason to need onward tkt. Always print out your itinerary for nonrev, no matter where. Also, have your company ID. HKG is not mainland China and NRT requires no shore pass for US passport holders. If anyone else knows different, they'll let you know. Pretty savvy bunch here. Cheers!

Thank you mrs 767 for your help! I am a US citizen. The state dept web site says we need proof of onward travel for both places, but I know sometimes real world practice is different. It sounds like what you are saying is that they are not too concerned about US Citizens visiting.

Is it your experience that I wouldn't even need a non-rev return ticket to HKG? That I can just purchase a one way ticket to HKG without any proof of onward travel?

BTW, I am not the Delta employee. I am the daughter, so I don't have a company ID, but I do have a Pass Travel Pocket Card to show I am a dependent. Thank you.

HKG is quite relaxed as it is one of Asia'a main travel hub. If you are holding US passport, there shouldn't be a concern. If you hold a India, Vietnam or Philippines passport (or if you look like one) they may give you a bit of an issue. My dark skin friend had to sit in the immigration for a few hours even though he does not hold passport from there. Yeah they are a bit racist.

I don't think NRT check as I have been there many times and they never asked for anything.

liza500--just print RT itinerary. We've never needed anything, but hubby always flew w/ID. I think I still have my "card"but you can't read the name/emp # w/out rubbing it on paper!

I flew HKG with a layover for a few days in January, nonreved there and had a confirmed seat out (purchased ticket after landing in HKG).
I was never questioned about onward travel (US citizen). There were 3 of us who nonreved in without any onward travel tickets until after we arrived.
Also, did not purchase hotel rooms until after we arrive.
Why buy a confirmed seat back to NRT? Between Jetstar , Cathay Pacific you could probably ZED. But, HK Express might have low cost seats. Once you land in HKG talk with ticket counters for load information and if good on the day you want to fly to NRT take a ZED. Quick look online puts Vanilla Air as the lowest costs confirmed seats, all depends on the day you fly.
