We are thinking about making a short visit to Puerto Rico. Would like to tour the island but we will need some direction of the best spots to hit. If you have been to Puerto Rico let me know what are the top things we should put on our list to see and do.
Thanks in advance.

You gotta see OLD SAN JUAN. Park your car somewhere and just walk around the section. Go see the old Spanish forts. There are two. Fort San Cristobal, and Fort Felippe Morro. The latter one is the better one, and worth really seeing. I recommend eating in METROPOLIS restaraunt in ISLA VERDE, in front of the hotel section...very good place. We stayed at the DORADO beach area, about 45 minute drive from the airport. Can be tough during traffic. Didn't tour the island, not enough time, but if you have the time, you should. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the info! Just curious though, if I do get time to tour the Island. What would you suggest I see and do?

I know a guy at work that goes there often. He tells me that the ride around the island is real nice. They have a beach on the western part called Playa Rincon around Aguadilla. I wanted to see the rainforest east of San Juan, but having been to many rainforest in Central America, it was really no big deal that I saw it or not. I bet if you just drove around the island, you could find an off the wall spot to go on the nice beaches. There is a nice beach on the southern end of the island, or Caribbean side, but I can't remember the name. It's the Puerto Ricans most popular beach. I also suggest you rent a car, its like driving in the states, and from what I saw, the roads looked good. Get out there, mingle and try all the foods they have. They like alot of "avichuelas" or beans with their rice, and plantain, pastellitos (empanadas). Nice tropical look to the island.

Coyne,
I've only been once but if I went back I would not stay in San Juan. I was not too impressed. I would venture to the Caribbean side after doing some reasearch for some out-of-the-way places... maybe Ponce or its surroundings? I do remember that they have some fairly nice goverment sponsored lodgings - the name escapes me... what did they call the places that you stayed at in Spain?

Chris they were called Paradores. After posting this about Puerto Rico I ended up talking to your friend Edgar at Delta. He grew up in the South West part of the Island. Has some great information about places to go and things to see. If you speak to him, ask him for a report. He gave me great information, much of what I can not remember. Would love to have it all in an article so I can use it to plan future trips.

He submitted a couple of articles about his travels... China and Mexico, but I never could get him to come be our Puerto Rico Correspondent.
