I had a change of plans and I am now trying to get to LHR. ATL has multiple flights for 9/15 but a lot of them don't look too good. I don't want to go somewhere like DTW and not get on that one flight, even if the load does look a bit better. Any suggestions for getting to LHR?
I will be flying with a companion (s3c)
I would wait until it gets closer to 9/15 and look at ATL or JFK, right now the last ATL flight has 50+ seats with nobody listed.
I would always go with the numbers--never look at "only one flight per day" gateway if a flight is wide open and the list is short. With multiple flight gateway cities, there can be a huge rollover if the only flight that looks good is the last one. If LFO (last flight out ATL is even a bit iffy and only flight DFW is wide open, why choose ATL? I don't get it--you're working with odds. If you want ot sit up front,go with the numbers--list and ATS.
Go to route map and start with LHR, then see how many flights are available from ALL US gateways--it's not like you're paying to get to a gateway. Tell me this--if there is weather issue, what will you do? Buy 2 tkts or go for Plan B? I believe you're overthinking this. No one can decide for you. Sometimes you even have to backwards to get to your destination.
Never doubt ATL. We rely on misconnects (especially the ones who get stuck in the security line and get off on the wrong concourse). Besides, the hotels in ATL are half the price of JFK/LGA if the flight is oversold.
Thank you everyone for your responses. I am just a little bit paranoid as this is my first international trip non- reving. I just wanted to hear others' with past experience chip in. I will be meeting my brother (who paid full fare) and I just want everything to go as smoothly as possible, which I know doesn't always happen when you are flying standby! If anyone has any other helpful hints or tips, that would be great!

I have a little different take on ATL...being retired with a low priority, I avoid it like the plague....even without considering I was on the Hilton Shuttle bus crash in May and spent four days in the hospital from hell in Atlanta.. :-) Going to LHR, look at MSP and DTW...way less non revs in my opinion. My two cents...
