Yes, what do you want to do, know and go?
First time in 1974, then around 2006 and 2007.

Thanks for answering. I am the parent of a Delta retiree living in the Chicago area. It seems like winter is here so I am looking for a warm place to spend some time. A rental by the week or two weeks sounds good. I appreciate your help. Thanks again.

Do you want to be on the Guanacaste peninsula or down by the south-west coast? Or in the Arenal/Central area? You can fly either LIR or SJO. Have you looked at airbnb or homeaway or similar sites for digs? What about a car?
[QUOTE=Wildcat;74710]No problem You fly into ALAJUELA, not San Jose. In Alajuela, take a cab close by where they rent vehicles. Same area where the airport hotels are located, maybe some 3 hotels close by, Hampton Inn, is one of them, right there they have rental cars. I thought I saw BUDGET and others. Easy and close to the airport. From there, you can drive anywhere. I recommend VOLCAN POAS. It's in Alajuela province about an hour and a half away from the airport heading north. Those hotels are nice too near the airport. San Jose is about 12 miles away. You can take a bus there if you need to or drive there. San Jose area cooler climate. Coast is hot.
Attachment 546Yup, that arctic air invaded Texas pretty good, been chilly all week. I think we get one day mild weather tonight, followed by another blast into the 20's at night for at least a few days more. (I've seen winters where the temps hardly dropped below 30.) Definitely the coldest November I've seen since I've been here. I think that hurricane in the Bering sea shifted the jet stream. This is really unusual. Chicago? I've been there in the winter. Oh yea.
As I mentioned, Delta flies into SJO airport and LIR airport, both from ATL. You can arrive one and return other (based on seats, of course). What sort of plans do you have in mind? You may want to split your 2 wks:
1) one interior--volcanoes, hot springs, hiking, coffee plantations, etc
2) one coastal--small beach towns or resort areas; there are plenty of either
Something for everyone.
Check the timing for weather issues, like rainy season, history, etc.
I might consider Panama for ease--happy to send you link for condo there (airline people). I've not stayed there but have been to Panama.
Thanks again for the info. I have been watching the weather in Costa Rica. It has been rainy every day for a few weeks according to the weather report. I think the rainy season ends soon. Where is LIR airport? I have been in Costa Rica once. Only for a few days. I stayed in San Jose, so I didn't see very much of the country. I did take a bus to a small town about 30 miles east of San Jose. I think it would be nice to have a place to use as get away in the winter. The flights to San Jose from Chicago are usually good for a Delta non-rev, so Costa Rica looks like the right place. I was in Panama last year. That was on my bucket list. The list is getting small.

LIR is Liberia, Guanacaste (west coast peninsula). There are some beach towns as well as AI resorts. Lots of condos south. Just start digging thru some guidebooks and websites. Check out the map and don't ignore the central Arenal region.
Thanks again. I thought the only Delta flights to Costa Rica were to San Jose. I will check the flights to LIR. It is always nice to have an option. I noticed that you are from Kentucky. I have been there many times. I was stationed at Ft Knox for a long time. Louisville is a nice city.
