Hello, I was looking down the list, and noticed nothing on Belgium. I was in Belgium returning from the Gulf War on board a ship back in 1991. The ship I was on was suppose to go to NORFOLK, VA but we got diverted to ANTWERPEN, BELGIUM. We were somewhere in the Med, when a shipmate asked me if I have ever been to Belgium. When I replied that I had not, he said, "Well, you are gonna see it now"? We went there to pick up ARMY ABRAHAMS TANKS. Sure enough, instead of a long voyage across the Atlantic, we ended up going north through the Bay of Biscaye in a rotten storm. We went through the English Channel, and proceeded through a LOCK system that lasted some 8 hours. We even could see ROTTERDAM as we proceeded. What an interesting place ANTWERP was. Got to go bar hopping all over that town, clubbing, and they have a crazy red light district, and the infamous "WINDOW SHOPPING" http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif. Drank plenty of Maes Pilsner. If you like architecture, this is definately an OLD CITY with many old buildings, much older than that of any building you find in AMERICA.

I've been to Brussels and liked it very much. But, you can probably see everything there is to see in about 3 days.
Been to Antwerpen - they have a lovely train station in addition to what you mentioned.
I have not been to Brugge. Everyone tells me that this is THE destination in Belgium - a beautiful medieval city.

What's up Randy? I see you are a Chicago Correspondent. I have been to CHITOWN several times. It is a great city. I was there in winter, and it was 21 minus up around North Chicago in December of 1989. Good to hear your response.

I spent New Year's 2002 in Brugge. Can't say enough about it. Food was expensive but fabulous. We staying in a hostel for $18 usd/night for 2.
We were actually planning on staying only 1 day and heading back to Brussels for New Years. Ended up cancelling Brussels all together and stayed in Brugge 4 days!
GO TO BRUGGE!!!
(Its only 55 min train ride from downtown Brussels)

Glad to see even a jarhead can have a good time in Belgium. Next time you are there don't forget to visit Ghent as well. And the Ardennes are fantastic in the summer. Interesting day trips (of course everything in Belgium can be a day trip) are Ostend on the coast, Waterloo, and the one of a kind engineering feats on the canal system (elevator locks/inclined barge rams). Sure beats spending the summer in Twentynine Palms. Tesek
