I am considering doing a study abroad summer session in London in the summer of 2010. To save money, I was hoping to be able to use a buddy pass on DL. I know that I will be the lowest priority as far as the standby list goes. The group will leave ATL on June 17 and I have to arrive the same day or earlier than the rest of the group. I just can't get there after them and miss the orientation or miss the first day of classes. I know summer is a bad time to non-rev. So should I even attempt this? Which would be better, LHR or LGW? I would prefer LHR, but I'll do what I have to do to get there. I am also not opposed to an ATL-JFK-LHR routing if ATL-LHR/LGW is full. I just need to get there on time. Also how much would it cost to non-rev RT? We leave London July 23.

you need to get your pass person to look up a total cost for you to nonrev to London. Currently, you can fly thru CVG for LGW only, as an option. The gateway city is not much of a cost issue--it's the total miles/taxes/fees. They can set you up as a pass rider, submit your preference of flights/airports and give you a price. They can delete you after checking. Of course, no guarantees for next yr tkt price.
You will likely have NW flights by then, so anotehr consideration.
I would always plan to arrive at least one day early if you have a drop dead date--even 2 is recommended--WITH Plan B if you don't make it! Like fly to DUB and take LCC or fly into CDG--take the chunnel....
That's a whole year away! Are you saying youre going to London first, then going on your study abroad elsewhere?? Not sure about your general plan.

I'll be at the University College of London for five weeks. I'll be traveling on the weekends, but that I'll do as a revenue passenger. After I posted my question I remembered CVG, but then I also remembered DTW is now an option as well. I want to save money by nonreving, but I don't want it to cost me as far as getting there on time.

Please do not attempt it.
I would suggest buying a ticket. There are no guarantees when non-reving.
Besides if you start early you might find a great deal online.
When you say, "I need to get there in time" That means buy a ticket. Seriously, it is not worth the risk.
I sent my son to study abroad in Cairo last year. I never once considered him to non-rev there, and he was even going in January when it was probably a good time to non-rev. It just wasn't worth the risk of not getting there ontime.

I would NEVER consider CAI except w/high seniority and S2 priority
I would NOT discourage this buddy pass rider IF they have options to fly over several days and lots of gateways
I have no idea who told you Jan was a good time to nonrev to Cairo--it['s the peak of the tourist season for Nile cruises and there has been a warning for pass riders for several years--particularly OAL
