Athens airport question
I'm going to be participating in the Athens marathon this October. I bought my ticket the first day they were available and got a great deal (I used my employee discount on a frequent flyer ticket roundtrip to MAD, but couldn't get discount on codeshare so purchased the ticket for MAD-ATH, $114 roundtrip first class ticket), only problem is that it gets in the night before the rest of my group comes in the next morning. My flight arrives at 2300 local time and by the time I get through customs and everything, I figured it would be easiest to sleep in the airport, it's not worth the $100 hotel room (plus too late for most transportation). I've read the profile on sleepinginairports.net, but there's only 1 even semi-recent review. Does anyone have any experience sleeping in the Athens airport?

transportation is available 24 hrs from ATH to city and a hostel can't be much more than $50
would you really sleep there prior participating in a marathon?

I was just looking at hostels in athens for my round the world trip! They are as little as 15 dollars. But you know hostels arent for everyone! I personally love them. Just lock all of your valuebles up and get a good night sleep.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've considered hostels, but every time I think I find a good deal on one, I start reading the reviews and they're talking about crawling over drug dealers at the door and bad neighborhoods. I almost think I would feel safer at the airport. If I knew for sure the hostel wasn't seedy, that would be one thing, of course that's the fun in hostels, right? :) If you wouldn't mind, I'd love to get your review of the hostel you stay in when you're in Athens, usndario.
I will be arriving a couple of nights before the marathon, so it's not like I would be sleeping in the airport, then getting up to run (well, technically I walk most of it anyway, so it's not like I'm some elite athlete or anything).
As far as transportation goes, is there Public Transportation available at night as well? As part of the marathon package, I think it's free several days before the race, although I may be coming in too early.
Thank you all for the help and advice, I've always wanted to go to Greece, and just wish I had the time and money to go exploring outside of Athens and the immediate area. Any tips you have would be welcome.
