Prague in Sept

The Czech Republic was mentioned in his Athens post, but instead of cluttering up vulindlela's post even more I figured I'd start a new one.

I am planing my fall beer drinking trip, and although I've done the O'fest my wife has not. So my plan is a couple days in Munich and then head to Prauge. The back up is the Austrian Alps.

I've been to MUC several times, but never PRG, so I'd love to hear some suggestions. There will be two couples (so a little change from the normal guys' trip). We all have about the same priority for flights and are comfortable walking in big cities.

So let's hear what your suggestions. Try and keep it near the city center and remember beer is the theme. TIA:cool:

ok--Pilsner...

First--look for an apt. My contact Josef has several in a 400 yr old bldg across from teh Romanian embassy #10 Nerudova Street, in Mala Strana, the Lesser Quarter, just below the castle district.. there are lots of other apts but I like his place and it's walking distance from there to St Nicolas Square then to Charles Bridge and cross to town square area.
Prague is mostly a walking city w/trams&surface transport most convenient to connect areas. We hardly ever use it, tho. Never needed metro. Crew hotel has just changed--Boss is there now--he'll stop flying PRG due to AC changes. It will only be airbus rotation. We actually have Hotel Hoffmesiter booked for Sept end.
Second--there are lots of brew pubs all over city. best known
Home they have a pensione there but not recommended to stay there--apt is better value. josef also has a shared bath 2 apt set-up on upper floor (walk-up)

Awesome! Thanks for this. I'm sending my friend the room link now. We are both Delta, so we are good on that end. I've seen the No Reservations episode you are talking about. I'll have to watch it again, though. I'm going to check out the other places you mentioned when I can get on a real computer- hard to see much on the phone.

We go often--we have faves and a special walk we enjoy, too. It's tram to funicular, to hilltop (w/stop at House Nebozizek halfway) onward to obseravtion tower (lift never works in the 5 yrs we've been going) have a wurst,hit the restrooms, walk on to Strahov Monastery(if you like art museums, there is one on the way) Wander around to the castle distrcit--find the garrison where soldiers comeout and follow them to the chaning of the guard--skip the $$ admission to castle--head straight to St. Vitus cathedral(free) and stand in awe of the most exquisite stained glass work from Alfonse Mucha--wander around the caastle gardens and work you way down the steps to the tram stop---or cross over to Thunovska street or Nerudova and have a few BEERS at a courtyard cafe.

Wait, are you saying there will be a direct ATL-PRG flight soon? If that is the case we may just skip MUC altogether. Have to run that by the wife, though.

Oh man, we are just going to miss you. We are planning on heading home on the 21st.

We are thinking MUC on the 14 so the others can see it before the 'fest. See the Landlords Parade, tapping of the 1st keg, & drink in the tents before it gets too packed to think, then leave town as the rest of the crowds are arriving. Everything but the dates is still fluid right now though.

It used to be ATL alternating but I guess they gave it up to airbus NY--this was the last NY rotation on the 767er...So much confusion and blonde moments...
Now it's Airbus so I guess it's NY only--just wrong AC!!

There is a town nearby called Cesky Krumlov--sister and BIL loved it--also Melk and the Monastery (as in beer-makign monks!)

A somewaht long article on Prague Food--saved in my files:
Narodni Trida metro stop, which is available through several tram lines, including the 22, where you will find Prague’s best smazeny syr, or fried cheese sandwich, for a modest 35kc upon dismounting the tram. This stand is by and far the place to get most savory smazeny syr anywhere in Prague with its perfectly flash fried and crunchy exterior, toasted bun and perfectly portioned tartar sauce.
So, now, after you’ve had some time to digest this appetizer of sorts, walk about ten minutes to Mala Strana (very close to the national theatre). Visit the restaurant Olympia (Vitezna 7, Prague 5, 11:00-24:00) was recommended to me by my Czech personal trainer Jirka Charvatova (who just happens to be a foodie) as one of the best places to try svickova, sliced and marinated beef sirloin in a cream sauce topped with cranberry compote served with knedliky, or traditional Czech dumplings, which will cost you about eight US dollars.

So, I understand that all this continual walking and exploring of Praha might still leave you a bit famished. If you’re in the mood for light fare, I have it on good word through a rather picky Czech named Lucie Pinusova, that a cheap restaurant by the name of Ego (Obloukova 25, Prague 10, 11:00-24:00) has the best cesnekovy polevka, or garlic soup, this side of the Vltava river, at a mere 35kc. Restaurant also serves some of Prague’s best klobasy, or grilled sausage, with mashed potatoes for 95kc. I realize that most people who come to the Czech Republic, are in fact carnivores, so if the infamous Czech roasted pork knuckle is what you’re after, I have just the place. My Czech friend David Strup dragged me to what he (and his nodding friends) agreed as the best place in Praha for pork knee/knuckle (classical Czech dish at U Provaznice (Provaznicka 3, Prague 1, 11:00-24:00) at a modest 235kc (a bit over 11 US dollars) for a savory and smoked meal. For traditional Czech goulas, our building R.A. Tyna, recommended I try a restaurant in nearby Vinohrady, which was her personal favorite for the Czech dish by the name of U Strecu (Budecksa 19, Prague 2), which served a hearty serving portion with knedliky, bread dumplings. Vicki along, who decides to deviate from my meal plan and order the Czech national dish of roast pork with dumplings and cabbage, and said it was quite possibly the best meal she had ever had in Prague. Our combined total, including two glasses of wine and tip, came out to 205kc, which was quite a nice surprise. My favorite dessert in all of Prague is one that is available everywhere, only one place makes it exactly the way it tastes best: U Knihovny (Veleslavinova 10, Prague 1) tucked away down a side street close to the Starometska metro stop with a surprisingly well-appointed interior and prices that go far under what the establishment could charge. A favorite of locals, this restaurant serves full entrees under 100kc, but their presentation of the Czech honey cake known as medovnik, at 39kc a slice, served with whipped cream and refrigerated to perfection, is one I urge you not to pass up. Reservations are recommended if coming at a busy time, as the establishment is quite popular. Lastly, for the Czech dessert and breakfast staple palacinky, I visited a place recommended as one of the best places to enjoy its magnificent airy texture. Café Louvre (Narodni 22, Prague 1, 9:00-23:30), is a rustic Parisian style café that boasts which sells the scrumptious items for 59kc a portion, topped with raspberry sauce and sour cream, and additionally boasts that it makes the “best coffee in Prague”.

That's a nice apt--very charming with the painted ceiling, too! One WC and second bath? Rare! You're a bit out of the main areas but probably on a major tram line. Bet your neighborhood is pretty cool, too! (ps--did you ever hear from Josef about his apt?)

I was on my phone and the whole bottom block didn't show. Good old Flash/iPhone issue rears its head again. Now that I'm on the computer I can see it. Looks like a cool place, and how can I turn down roast pig!
The apt is not on the main drag but looks close enough that we should be able to walk to a bus/tram (I hope). The layout does seem a little odd, but its just a week, so I think it will be OK. It looked like a neat place from the pictures. I didn't hear back from Josef, so I just assumed he was full during our week.
Hoping we can go straight from JFK, but going to book a couple ZEDs just in case. Looks a bit tight, we will see. Very excited.

use trams whenever possible--pay attention to the time limit and be certain to validate tickets upon arrival of transport
I really think the character of the ceiling is great--that's what we had in one of the Josef's apts and it's really special. Take advantage of the washer--just realize-no dryer...

jbear--did you decide on public transport or shuttle/taxi from PRG? I asked Chris' shuttle company to give me an airline employee discount--that might be really smart since there are 4 in your party. It's too bad we don't cross over timing--we could have a meet at the Ropemaker's Wife! How do your flights look? So far, ours are really good!

Because there are four of us we decided the apt's shuttle from the airport would be our best bet.

I hate that we are this close on the dates and won't be able to meet. But we will lift a toast to you while at the RMW.

Our flight home looks good, getting there is iffy. We may leave a day early depending on how things look on Wed AM. The place is available, so why not :D

Arrived this AM. Walked to Charles Bridge and strolled around the old town. Amazing sights, but a word of caution, don't try to take pics of the US embassy.

Never forget to validate your transit tkts.
How did AMS/PRG zed go? We're looking better today but who knows?

It went ok once we found a KLM agent that knew what to do with our ZEDs. The Delta office inside the terminal doesn't open until 0900, just a heads up. Your ZED card will get you through security and on to the KLM agents at "Transfer 2" that can get everything taken care of. We ended up on the OK flight, which was nice because it is ZED Low.

Thanks for all the help in making this a successful trip. We had a great time, I'll try to do a write up later this week.
