While I've traveled internationally before, I've never made a connection in an intl city. I will most likely be connecting in FRA enroute to PRG and was curious if I'll have to clear customs/immigration in FRA in addition to PRG, or just in PRG?
Looking at a potential 1 hr connection in FRA and didn't want to plan that if it could take awhile to get through customs.
I have done that a few time.
Yes, you do go through immigration, but it is in transit so you do not leave the sterile area.
FRA is a horrible place to connect though! Worst airport I have been through in over 150 airports.
We had an hour there on a revenue ticket and BARELY made the flight. Our luggage did not however...
The departure tax is high also, at over $100.
Can you go through AMS?
$100 departure tax?!!? As in, if I transit FRA going and coming, $200 per person? Or is that just if I stay in FRA?
Ok, whew, I just found this bit of info:
"Germany's government has created a new tax on air travel, effective immediately and charged on all tickets sold from now on, for flights departing Germany from January 1st, 2011 or later.
The tax is
- 45 Euros for long-haul flights: to the USA, all of North and South America, Asia and Australia.
- 25 Euros for medium distances, like southern Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East
- 8 Euros for domestic or short-haul European flights
It is yet to be seen how airlines will implement this, but it is likely that the tax will be added to the ticket prices, not charged in cash at the airport.
So, if you are travelling to Europe, it is cheaper if you don't plan to leave from Germany by plane, but from a different country.
Flights arriving in Germany are not subject to tax - only departing flights.
Transit of less than 12 hours (24 hours for long-haul connections) is also not subject to tax."
I think you have to remember that unless you have confirmed space on the onward flight you are not considered as a transit or transfer passenger .. you are a joining passenger ... you need to collect your baggage, clear immigration go landside and then check in again ... consequently ( and unfortunately ) you will normally be liable for all the departure taxes and charges.

Folks ....There appears to be a bit of confusion here ... the German tax you mention above is not new and HAS been in operation since Jan 2011.
There are four German tax codes:
1. DE - Security Tax
2. RD - Domestic Passenger Service Charge
3. RA - International Passener Service Charge
4. OY - Air Transport Tax
The OY, which ranges in amount based on itinerary ticketed, was effective for sales and for travel on/after 01Jan12. The others have earlier effective dates.
