I received the following and wondered if there was any one in our community that would like to meet the challenge to volunteer to write a good instructional article for new nonrevs???
Hello!
My husband and I are parents of a person who works at Comair--one of a bunch of new people they are hiring. We have just gotten our flight priviledges and are very excited about non rev. I just wondered if one of you experienced non rev travelers would write an anticle for rank beginners? Something like Non-Rev for Dummies? I know there are lots of things that might seem obvous to you who have traveled for years, but are a mystery to me and would relally help. I have read the one article in your system that talks about how to travel, but think we need something quite basic. Can you help?

My non-rev article will give you a good overview what you're up against!

How to be a successful non-rev? Two things immediately come to mind: Back-up plans and patience. You will always need both. Never non-rev anywhere you MUST be at a certain time (murphy's law will come into play then) and always have a back-up plan both for getting there and coming back. While you should let flight loads guide you, don't always let them deter you from trying. I have personally made it onto a flight (with 4 people) that was oversold by 30 and we were numbers 26-30! Make sure you ask about an airline's dress code and be especially sweet to the gate agent. Don't harrass them to find out whether you will get on. They'll call your name if you make it. Please be prepared to board immediately after your name is called. Learn to pack lightly and make sure your carry on meets the size (and weight) requirements.
Let's see, I can't think of anything else right now. If you need further help, we are always happy to give advice around here.

Hi
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
Read your company's non-rev travel rules.
List for all flights, including connections and return. Do not list on your back ups. Trust me, the punishment for multiple listings is NOT standing in the corner
Back up plans (alternate flights, alternate airports, alternate routing). In other words, plan your trip as if Murphy's Law was written with you in mind. Trust me, it's much easier coming up with plan D at your kitchen table than at gate 47A.
Scheduling, as a general rule midweek, non holiday periods are the best, with early morning the best times. Try to stay away from the last flight of the day. That last flight is kinda like the last elephant at the circus, no options.
Check loads and the weather forecast. Believe me either can change at the very last minute and put a major 'hitch in your getalong'.
Lastly, as a veteran of the middle seat, remember armrests have no owners, establish dominance at the earliest opportunity.
Have Fun!
Give up on travelling around the holidays--please! When I'm 24 oversold, I really don't have time to check other routings for you. Pay attention to the weather also--if it's been snowing/raining for the past 3 days, those loads may have changed dramatically!
Decide ahead of time if you are willing to separate from a traveling companion.
If I can get you get on, I *will* let you know!
