Internet search for local establishment is my first choice. I like finding local mom & pop type places. I just feel they have more character and usually offer better service. They may not be as new or have as many amenities but I usually get good local advice and hospitality.
Second choice would be an Internet discounter. I always check here on The Nonrev Network hotel search. The discounts are good and competitive with other Internet discounters and any proceeds help support this great community of nonrevs!

I ended my subscribtion to ASU a long time ago. I found that I very rarely use it and that it didn't usually produce the best deals.
Generally I start with a whole host of internet searches for local establishments. Then I compare it with sites like Travelocity, Hotels.com, etc just to see what else is out there.
I usually (but not always) find that internet seaches for local properties produce better pricing that the interline discount. Plus the local properties unually offer better service and that personal touch that you don't get elsewhere.

I use the hotel chains websites. I've signed up for many of the hotel clubs and get their e-mails about special promotions. I frequently find the promotions, many of which include meal coupons and free nights' stay, are a better value than the airline rate. At the very least the free membership lets us enjoy a free newspaper and early check-in/late checkout privileges, which is very nice when you spent the previous 6 hours slouching in a chair at DFW. http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
BTW, the one time we did try a 'local establishment' the front desk clerk was quite surprised we wanted our romm for the ENTIRE night. http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/smokin.gif Trust me some guy in a New Orleans Po'Boy shop, is NOT the best source for a hotel recommendation. http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emotic...on_biggrin.gif

I almost always prefer the mom and pop thing unless I need to be near an airport or something. There have been a few duds, but mostly some of the best places to stay and people that I have been privileged to meet!

I have used almost every site you have listed at one time or another. I am lucky that I have friends and relatives all over the world. We very often mooch free room and board from them. Lately though I have found my best deals on the Hotels own web sites and local bed and breakfasts.
