European & Middle Eastern Airlines treatment of non-revs?

Has anyone had any experiences flying on any of the following airlines?

Lufthansa
Emirates
British Airways

How good are these airlines to non-revs? are they nice? will they ever upgrade?

CO are Star Alliance, you should have ZED Low fares in C class, so why wait for an upgrade?!

Hi usndario,

I would definitely agree, all three are very good to staff, although I wouldn't necessarily count on upgrades from any of them, at least not as a general rule.

I like BA, their online listing system is clear and concise, and their registration/check in area for staff in LHR is the best I have seen anywhere.

Not so.....may be in the future, but right now it is ZM tkts in coach only......on all three airlines.

Just because a carrier is a member of Star does not necessarily mean that we get Z-Low especially in C. CO for e.g. is Z-L in Y but Z-M in C same applies for UA staff on US.

Looking further Air China also a Star member does not offer pass travel at all since their company policy prohibits it. At least that applies for UA staff.

I have flown all three and here is how it went:LH--SFO-FRA-AMS-MUC-SFO no upgradeEK--DXB-JFK no upgradeBA--JFK-LHR bumped up to business classBA--LHR-SEA no upgradeBA--PHL-LHR bumped up to business class.It really comes down to the gate agents because my friend has been upgraded often on LH.

The gentleman asked about Lufthansa, Emirates and British Airways. Only one Star Carrier in there and it's a Z-L:-)

On Lufthansa flights originating in Germany at least, an upgrade is generally not possible on standby non-rev if your ticket is not issued for that class. If there is only free seats in business or first and you have an ticket in coach/economy they will generally accept you but they will upgrade a full fare coach passenger into business and give you his seat in coach. While it is unfortunate for the non-rev you can understand the logic - the full fare pax pays more than we do. You can always smile and ask though! Best of luck, enjoy your flights.
