travel on EK
Wondering if anybody has any experience traveling non-rev on Emirates? Will be traveling on them this September from MRU-DXB-LAX or SFO.
Do the SFO/LAX flights, when operated with the -300ER instead of the -200LR experience weight and balance restrictions when the winds pick up?
Has anybody ever been upgraded by EK? I've heard stories of them doing that even if you don't have an upgrade agreement, but I doubt that would happen on such a business travel heavy route.
Thanks for any info! :)

Hello,
I non-reved on EK back in Nov of 09, SFO-DXB and it was already being operated by the 777-300 ER. They cap the number of seats sold for that flight due to payload restrictions (very long flight, 14:55 the day I flew it). They were awsome, most of the crew was very nice and they gave us our seats at the ticket counter. The friend i was traveling with inquired about getting upgraded to business class and the agent advised her they could not do this. Once onboard I had a seat next to me empty and the whole experience was quite comfy (even in coach).
I do know up until recently EK had embargoed the route to staff travel (after I flew it) due to the heavy loads and the payload restrictions, not sure if this also affects LAX as well as both flights into LAX are being oped by the 777-300ER as well. Double check with your pass bureau to see if this route is once again open to staff travel, by Sept. I am sure loads on this route should have gone down.

we flew JNB/DXB and that Emirates flight, to this date, was the WORST nonrev EVER. Lousy service, lousy seats (777) lousy crew attitude and lousy food, decent AVOD, tho.
Pretty close to the worst flight I've taken since 1976.
Won't be using them any time soon...probably never again.

Yeah I generally avoid EK - it is the last flight home so I don't like to rely on it, but also the food and service is not all that. On the 777 they squeeze in one more seat abreast than most carriers (3-4-3) which is very tight. The food I found average and crew seemed not so happy... but that being said I have only used them twice

EK...not the bset!
Travelled on EK several times...the worst thing I can say is that the drinks cart is always brought out after the food (Y).
On one flight, we had all finished every crumb on our trays before we were offered a drink!!
Crew bit offhand and have been on one of their 777's and the seat fabric was all ripped!!
Cheers, Flasher

Eeek I seem to be on the minority when it comes to EK and my experience. Maybe I'm just easily amused by International carriers.
You all have to admit ICE on their 777-300ER's is pretty cool. I was entertained for the entire duration of the flight.
Bollywood movies, Arabic cinema, Family Guy, The Simpsons, and best of all some very interesting and entertaiing fellow passengers which kept the crew on their toes for the whole flight - what else does one need to keep entertained.

totally HORRID
there can't be enough "entertainment" to satisfy my sore butt and need for decent food /beverage service. 777 3-4-3 STINKS
our crew was the PITS--no one could have made their lives better because they didn't give a rat's A$$. I forgot about eh late bev service. rang 8 times--on/off to get my tray cleared. After prob 20 mins I took mine and the woman'snext to me to the galley (after crawiing over her to the aisle) and put it on the galley counter--FA's stood there eating and said NOTHING.
I tried ringing again for berage serivce--3 of did in turn and nothing until the aisl pax went to ask for service.
Marge and Homer Simpson couldn't save this flight. My life doesn't revolve around cartoon characters.

had a nice experience on ek .dxb hkg...they have a special area for nonrevs...boarding pass 2 hours before flight...

Thanks for all the replies so far. I don't care near as much about the service as I do about the probability of getting on the DXB-SFO/LAX flights. Fastest way home, and I've heard they run into weight and balance restrictions quite a bit on the 777-300ER. I can't find anything about an embargo right now on any EK flights, nor is my pass bureau aware of any. We'll see what happens! Not a lot of options out of MRU, so if DXB-USA isnt looking good, back to JNB-LHR/FRA it is!
-
If DXB-USA isn't looking good and you are having to go via LHR then you could look at the MRU-LHR direct rather than having to go via JNB.
On the subject of Emirates .. I've flown on them at least half a dozen times and bro more than a dozen ( all down the back ) and not had a bad experience. As Flasher says their proceedure is to do the meal first and then drinks so if you know this then just ask for a drink as soon as poss after take off ....

I have to admit, I am always stunned at the number of awards they appear to win. Flown several times, both C and Y, not been overly impressed.
Jet Airways - Dom Perignon upfront, a taste of the good old days and Qatar, both for me are like a trip down memory lane.
