Passing up a Buddy pass
Well guys my July trip to the Philippines is off and changed to October. That means leaving from Cancun with 3+ connection s. I figure with the new fees they are adding to each segment I might as well buy coach and be sure of getting there. Rough calculation is about 100 to 1200 on Delta with a pass, and I can do it for 1300 to 1400 in coach. Sucks flying that far in coach, but since I am only 5"1 and 130 pounds, it should not be too awful. Opinions???

Do you fit in the overhead bins?
Sorry, I couldn't help it!!
Any LCC to get you there one the long haul? You can use you pass for the last US point at a decent price, then have positive space for the big one? Depends on the fuel surcharges...

I understand your pain... United gives 24 buddy pass segments, and extended family (grandparents/grandchildren, parents in law, siblings) can get a slightly lower rate and slightly higher priority (higher than normal buddy passes). There is also the option to exchange the buddy pass segments (while keeping extended family ones) for a second person equivalent to a spouse. I think that may be the way to go.
Oh, just to give you an idea of how much buddy passes cost: Our agreement with a few carriers allows for accompanied companions, generally at ZED high. I looked up one nonstop route shared by United and another airline, and for an employee+companion's taxes and fees, the final cost is actually slightly cheaper for me to go on that interline route, and it's unlimited compared to buddy passes.

I would recommend buying the positive space and calling it a day. You won't be stressed about loads or last minute flight irregularities. If there are any irregularities it is the airlines responsability to reacommodate you. With the price buddy passes are going I think it's worth booking a cheap ticket in advance and not worry about nonreving.
Just my 2 cents.

That is about the conclusion I came up with. I considered using the pass from CZM to LAX but that is 2 segments and costs more on the pass than to just pay for coach. Either way I go it is going to be a long freaking trip. I sure wish it was during the time I am usually in the states, but NO, my son has to have mommy visit in OCT. Not looking forward to spending overnite in LAX or SFO.
