American Airlines NOT Listing First Class for Non-Revs?

JetNet hasn't been listing first class availability on the Travel Planner for most international and domestic flights lately. Does anyone know why? Is is because they have new planes that don't have first class or are they limiting non-rev access to first class?

Only certain aircraft such as the 777-300 and A321 used for transcon flights between jfk and lax & sfo have a 3 class cabin with first class. The 777-200 are in the process of converting from 3 class to 2 class so if you're lucky, you may still be able to get first. On all other international aircraft, the highest class of service is business (737, 757, 767, 787 & A330). On domestic operated aircraft that have 2 classes of service, the choices will be coach & first.

Thanks - so basically they're doing away with first class on all aircraft? A bit too egalitarian for my taste :)

Not exactly. True first class still remains an option on the 777-300 and A321 transcon. On 2 class aircraft, the front cabin is called First Class when flying domestic and business class when flying international. The NRTP can be confusing because it seems to always display 3 classes of service even though in reality, most aircraft don't have 3 classes.

Yeah - that's what I'm confused about - the NRTP shows three classes on some flights (from London) and only two classes on others. On the flight I just took from LHR to JFK, there were originally two classes listed and then they shifted it to 3 classes and then when I got to the airport they had shifted it back to 2 classes. And it seems that the three class listing has disappeared from most of the listings on jetnet. I'm just a registered companion not the employee so I don't really understand what's going on.

JFK-LHR is a confusing one because they use the 777-200 and 777-300 on this route. All 777-300 are 3 class (F/J/Y) while the 777-200 have either J & Y if they have been converted or F/J/Y if they have not been converted. AA is in the process of converting the 777-200 to J & Y only. In the past when the 777-200 was 3 class. there were usually pretty good odds of getting F as a nonrev but at a cost, especially departing LHR. The configuration was 16 F/37 J/194 Y. Haven't tried to nonrev to LHR on the -300 or converted -200 but with only 8 seats in F on the -300, the odds aren't so great anymore. Aircraft subs happen a lot so if they were planning on using a 3 class 777-200 then change to a 2 class, you're screwed. Sometimes, aircraft subs are beneficial. Once flying from HNL-SFO, I was able to get F because they used a 767-300 instead of the scheduled 757.

Thanks so much - that explains what happened in London the other day. I guess I just have to hope I get on business from now on. It's not a big deal flying to NYC from Europe because it's usually a day flight, but going back to Europe I need to be able to sleep as they are generally overnight flights. Will keep my fingers crossed. Also Tokyo, Beijing, etc., are too long to endure coach.
