Bonjour Carl,
We should go to San Francisco in August for some days. We look for a hotel of good comfort, placed well ( yes I always believe in Christmas Dad ) susceptible to propose us an airline discount.
Any advice will be welcome!!!
Thank you in advance for your help.
A bientôt !

Welcome onboard Carl,
We get to the San Francisco area at least once a year. It will be good to have someone to ask questions to.
This year our big trip may be a drive up the coast from SFO to SEA. I will be looking for tips, ideas and discount info sometime this Fall. If you see anything of interest please post.
Thanks!

Hi Carl, you are just the person I need to ask about SF, I will be traveling the end of October, I will fly into Oakland, how will I get to Chinatown from the airport? I am trying to find a decent hotel also, plz let me know if you recommend any, I also want to go visit Nappa Valley is it far from Chinatown? Is there a train that will take us to see more of SF? Please forgive me for being so naive, I have wanted to travel to SF for many, many years. so many places to visit and so little time. I want to thank you for your expertise in this matter.Lisa from Tampa.

Flying into Oakland, take the red, blue and orange AIRBART bus to the Oakland Coliseum BART Station. Cost is $2.00 Hop a SF/Daly City Train to the Montgomery Station. Chinatown is a short distance away. The Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel is only one block away. That is the closest hotel however not the cheapest. give me some time and i will look y something with an airline discount. There are no trains to Napa Valley, best idea would be car rental, depending on where in the Napa Valley you are headed determines how long it will take. Dozens of great wineries. Try the V. Sattui winery. It's an old style grocery and park like setting perfect for a picnic or gathering supplies for travelling deep into the heart of the Napa/Sonoma Wine Country. If you are a movie buff try the Coppola Niebaum Winery, proprieted by Francis Ford Coppola, Great wine, atmosphere and Hand Rolled Cigars. Another option would be to hire a limousine, they take you to most of the wineries in the area and are your designated driver in case you get a little saturated. I'll get back to you.... Carl

Hey Carl,
I am a dedicated fan of San Francisco, but i hvent heard do they have the BART completed all the way out to SFO yet?? When I fly in I use the mass transit and was just wondering if they completed it yet.. Would make my day trips alot easier. Thanks for your help..
-
Test running of the trains began in august yielding positive results. BART is currently working on a fare structure for the extension. Possibly a slight increase in ticket cost, around 25-30 cents. Regular scheduled service to SFO is slated to begin in Jan or Feb of 2003 I can't quite remember offhand. But the station is located in the brand new absolutely beautiful international terminal. Easy access to the North and South terminals.

You can take either public transit or a shuttle to fishermans wharf. Public Transit is much less expensive. When you arrive in OAK, proceed to the front of the terminal and cross the first street to a bluish reddish orange colored awning with the words AirBART written on it. Buy a $2.00 ticket from the macheine there, and wait for the AirBART bus. This will take you to the Oakland Coliseum BART station. After you purchase your train ticket, proceed up the escalator to the platform, stay on the right side and wait for a train that says SF/Daly City. Get onboard and take it all the way to the first stop after entering the Transbay Tube, Embarcadero Station. Exit the station and walk toward Pier 1 Customs Facility and Port of San Francisco Office, denoted by a tall spire with lights. Cross street and turn left. There are a number of busses and taxis that will take you to Fishermans Wharf or the walk is approximately 1.1 miles along the water.

I am flying into SFO for lunch. Where can I get Public Transit to the WHARF ?????
-
I would say take BART from the airport but once again there is another delay in the progress. You can still take BART though, but it will not be directly from the airport. Go to the lower level baggage claim area, and look for the SAMTRANS bus stop. Wait for the BX route bus. cost is 1.25 at last check, the bus will round the airport terminal and then head to the United Airlines Maintainence Hangar. After it leaves the hangar, it will enter the freeway and take you to the Colma BART station. Buy your train ticket from the automated machine, and catch any train leaving the station. For now Colma is the end of the line station. Two options, take the train to the Powell Street station, here you will be in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Buy a $2 Cable Car ticket and take it all the way to the end of the line. 2nd option, take the train all the way to Embarcadero station, this is the cruise ship terminal and customs facility, it is also close to Pac Bell Park. Take a street car or walk or taxi, the 1.1 miles to Fishermans wharf. Nice walk along the waterfront, right at the footsteps of the financial district and the sky scrapers of the city. Caution, do not travel past Embarcadero station otherwise, you will enter the Transbay Tube and end up across the bay in Oakland. Have fun. http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thanks, Carl! You just answered every question I had about getting from the airport to the wharf. I am taking a cruise out of San Francisco in a month and didn't want to take a taxi from the airport if I could help it.

Carl, I posted a message in another line asking for info about 49ers tickets but I thought I would ask here and see what you know about them.
I looked online and saw that they are selling them for about $58.00 each but was hoping that someone could get a better deal.
Any help would be great !! I am looking for 3 tickets to the 49ers vs steelers Nov 17th game.
Thanks,

I just spoke to a res. agent at this hotel. Although they do offer an airline rate it is not $75.00 as Carl indicated.
The rate that was quoted to me as an Airline rate for a Fri and Sat was $135.00 per night + taxes. She was unaware of a rate lower than that.
-
The rate that I quoted was for over 6 months ago. San Francisco is a busy place during the summer. You should not expect the rate to be the same as it was when I posted a while back. And I foiund the rate located on ID90.com The blame is not all mine.

Hi Carl, could you please let me know if it is worthwhile taking a tour of Winchester House. We are coming over from Australia in September/October and with the exchange rate will cost about $A120.00 to do a tour of the house and behind the scenes tour. Thanks

Hey Carl, what do you know about the Presidio Inn of San Francisco (2361 Lombard St.)? Is it an okay place to stay? Their website looks good. I got a great interline rate there in October.

Hi Carl--
After reading all the informative posts regarding SFO I just wanted to check with you regarding the public transportation from SFO airport to SFO proper--say Fishermans Wharf. I have heard that they finished it--is this true and could you give me the scoop on where to go and how to do it--also approx costs? Would it be practical to stay in an SFO airport hotel and take the public transportation in everyday? (the airport hotels are much cheaper, but I'm going to check on some of the other places you recommended--they look good and have a reasonable --ie cheap--prices, too)
I haven't been to SFO in years and am taking the kids just before Thanksgiving so hopefully it will be cheaper and less rushed. WE don't mind if it's cooler. Any suggestions on places to eat that either are 1)someplace everyone should visit at least once OR 2) a personal favorite of yours--they don't have to be gourmet type places--just good food at good prices. Thanks for any help/info--Jean H/flyinlow

What's going on flyin low??? It is true, that they did begin BART service from the SFO airport into San Francisco and the rest of the system. It may seem practical to find great hotel discounts near the airport, however, rather I have lately found some really great 3 and 4 star hotel rates on hotwire.com and they are in the city. I would budget at least 3.25 per person to take BART from SFO into town. As far as places to eat, I would have to say that one of my favorite places to go is the Cheesecake Factory, located in Union Square on the sixth floor of Macy's. The prices are reasonable and the menu is 20 pages long. There are also forty different types of cheesecakes. If you want to be able to eat and enjoy activities, try Fisherman's Wharf, they have all of the waterfront activies and a number of waterfront seafood restaurants. If youe head take BART to the Powell Street station, you will be on Market Street, in the heart of all the shopping. There you can catch a the cable cars which will take you to Fishermans Wharf, or take BART to Embarcadero Station which places you in the Financial District which is a one mile walk to the Wharf along the waterfront. If you choose this option, make sure to get off of the train at Embarcadero, otherwise the next stop will be across the bay in Oakland. Anyway, if you need anymore help, just let me know. Are you planning on going to Alcatraz? If so I would recommend buying your ticket in advance (like as soon as you arrive). Every time I've tried to buy a ticket they are usually sold out for at least 1 if not 2 days.

There are a few hotels in the Fishermans Wharf area. The nice thing is that they are small and not big and crowded. The most in expensive would be the Best Western Fishermans Wharf, then next step up would be the Courtyard by Marriott Fish. Wh. followed by both the a Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express. All are currently advertising rates between 79 and 130 dollars per night, that is with the airline discount, just mention to the desk clerk that you are a DL employee. http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/hdst.gif

Carl, do you know if the BART goes to or near Antioch, CA? Or if there are reasonable shuttles? I have to take an elderly (90 yr) aunt and I hate driving in the Bay Area traffic!

Carl- I'm looking for a cheap hotel near OAK airport. It doesn't have to be fancy, just safe. I will be arriving at 10:30 pm with 4 small kids so I need something safe and close.
I am an AQ emploee with some Delta privleges. Mahalo
