Evan just wanted to let you know our drive up I-70 was a four-wheel adventure. Once we crossed into Colorado we ran into fog, rain, sleet, a hailstorm and just outside Vail, SNOW, all with 'Steely Dan's Greatest Hits' accompanying every slip and slide.
Trust me, hearing your driver singing

Hey Evan, can you help out a newbe non-rever. I am hoping to fly on a Delta buddy pass to SLC sometime between Dec 18-20 and back to DFW around 12/24-26. Are there days/times to avoid at all costs or is it worth even trying? There will be 4 of us and I really prefer not to split up.
Also, have any suggestions for condos close to Alta or Snowbird that are actually affordable during Christmas break? Am I alot better off staying in SLC and driving or do the roads get pretty clogged up to the ski areas?
Any help you can give will be appreciated.

I have been to SLC the past 2 winters to take my middle son snowboarding for a couple of days. So, I know a little about SLC http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
This year will be a little different. I am taking along one of my other sons, he is a little guy of 15...he is very small for his age, he could pass for 10. I am taking him along to get him ski lessons so that he can join the Ski Club at his school this winter (we have a short ski season in Maryland, and it starts late, maybe late December if we are lucky with snow http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif So, we are going to try to get to SLC early season (November hopefully) so that he can be ready when Ski Club starts.
Do you have any recommmendations to which Ski Resorts would be best for lessons? We will be there for just a couple of days...do you think private lessons would be better? (He has skied once in his life a few years ago http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Good to hear that you are coming to SLC. I think the best place to Learn is Solitude, they have pretty good pricing and the ski school is great for getting started. You can have him enter into a class there and they will teach him. I think you can go to www.solitude.com and they will have all the info for classes and pricing. Good luck and let me know if there is anything else you need.

I grew up in Atlanta and my parents have a place in Odgen so we fly between ATL and SLC all the time. I would warn you very heavily on the dates you mentioned. ATL, DFW, and SLC are all hubs for DL and the loads can be crazy. Weekends are also pretty bad and its ski season and christmas. Bad combination. Since there are 4 of you I would not get my hopes up of staying together. If you can get out to SLC, getting back should not be a problem if you are willing to travel on Christmas day. The 25th is the least travelled day of the year. Just start checking flights around the end of November and talk to the employee who gave the passes to you about creative alternate routings if the non-stops look bad. Again...the weekend before Christmas will be very tight...keep this in mind.

Matt's right on target, nonrevving during the holidays is tough and add to that traveling out of DFW with a group (something I'm very familiar with) sounds to me like a perfect storm. My suggestion would be to push your trip back to January and even then expect some of your group to be bumped. Trust me, DFW is rough on non-revs http://www.nonrev.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Evan, Hi.
It looks like I may have 4 spare days up my sleeve in October/November in ABQ. Thought I may go for a drive and SouthEast UT looks good.
Which of Canyonlands, Natural Bridges and Arches parks do you think is worth the drive?
I've heard the new highway (Centennial Highway or something like that) between Blanding and Hanksville is something special. Is it ???!!!
I may do that option instead, which leaves Natural Bridges and Glen Canyon as the obvious choices of the ones above.
Any thoughts???

any of those canyons are great. I was just down that way coming home from Lake Powell and there was a big truck that flipped over and blocked both lanes. it was an 8 mile long parking lot. lucky for me it happened about 15 minutes before I hit it and we could see the truck from where we were stopped. so we went off road and around it and kept going. (after a half hour delay).
I am sure you will enjoy it down there, just remember to keep track of how much gas you have in the car so you dont get stuck between filling stations.
